What happens if my SJ train is cancelled?
Your options when a train is cancelled, and what to do after 100 minutes.
Short answer
On a route of 150 km or more, a cancelled train gives you the choice between a refund and rebooking on equivalent terms, according to Konsumentverket. If no alternative is offered within 100 minutes of the planned departure, you may buy your own ticket and claim reasonable costs. Put your demand to the company in writing.
Why
- Konsumentverket (the Swedish Consumer Agency) says that when a train is cancelled or delayed you choose between a refund and rebooking, and that a fully cancelled trip gives a refund of the whole ticket price unless you chose rebooking.
- According to Konsumentverket, you are entitled to your refund within 30 days from when the train company received your request, and you should not pay extra costs for a rebooking.
- Your Europe says that for a delay or cancellation of 60 minutes or more you are entitled to meals and refreshments in proportion to the waiting time, and to accommodation if you must stay overnight.
Details
Konsumentverket says a flight is not equivalent transport, and that the train company may limit accommodation to three nights in cases such as extraordinary circumstances. If you cannot agree with the company, Konsumentverket points to municipal consumer advice and a complaint to the National Board for Consumer Disputes (ARN). For compensation after a delay, see trains in Sweden (SJ) and for cross-border trips see international buses and trains.
Tip
Keep receipts and records, and send your claim to the train company in writing, as Konsumentverket advises. If your journey continues abroad, see border checks in Sweden.
What may differ
On routes shorter than 150 km (15 mil) Swedish law on public transport passengers' rights applies instead of the EU train regulation, according to Konsumentverket, and the rights differ.
Common misconception
You have to wait for the train company to offer a solution, however long it takes.
What actually happens
Konsumentverket says that if you get no rebooking option within 100 minutes of the planned departure, you no longer have to wait for a reply.
