Can you drive a diesel car in Stockholm?
Environmental zone classes and what applies to diesel cars.
Short answer
Yes, diesel cars may be driven in Stockholm, but on Hornsgatan the class 2 environmental zone requires diesel cars to meet Euro 6. A planned class 3 zone in the city centre, open only to electric, fuel-cell and gas vehicles, was revoked by the county administrative board on 19 May 2026.
Why
- Environmental zone class 2 covers cars, light buses and light trucks, and a diesel vehicle must meet Euro 6, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.
- The City of Stockholm introduced class 2 on Hornsgatan in 2020 and tightened the diesel requirement to Euro 6 on 1 July 2022, according to a City of Stockholm council document.
- The county administrative board revoked the city's decision on a class 3 zone on 19 May 2026, according to Länsstyrelsen Stockholm.
Details
Class 3 is the strictest class: only electric, fuel-cell and gas vehicles may drive there, according to the Swedish Transport Agency. The county board said the city's investigation did not show that the benefits outweigh the economic consequences, and its decision can be appealed to the Swedish Transport Agency. Class 1 zones, found in Stockholm and seven other cities, are for heavy vehicles. For driving rules in general, see driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
If you drive a diesel car or a rental diesel, check that it meets Euro 6 before using Hornsgatan, and check the City of Stockholm's traffic pages for the current zone rules.
What may differ
Heavy trucks and buses are covered by class 1, which has its own Euro 6 requirement in Stockholm since 1 January 2021, according to the City of Stockholm council document.
Common misconception
Diesel cars are banned in central Stockholm.
What actually happens
The planned class 3 zone, which would have admitted only electric, fuel-cell and gas vehicles, was revoked by the county administrative board on 19 May 2026, although the decision can be appealed.
