How often does a car need inspection in Sweden?
The intervals for passenger cars and light lorries and what a missed deadline means.
Short answer
A passenger car is inspected first within 36 months of the month it was put into traffic. The next inspections follow 24 months after the first and then 14 months after each previous one. Transportstyrelsen counts the deadlines in months, not exact dates, and sends no reminder.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says a passenger car or lorry up to 3,500 kg total weight must have periodic inspection, the first time no later than 36 months after the month it was first put into traffic.
- Transportstyrelsen says the second inspection is due no later than 24 months after the month of the first inspection, and later ones no later than 14 months after the month of the previous inspection.
- Transportstyrelsen says that if you do not have the vehicle inspected in time you automatically get a driving ban, and that it sends no notice when an inspection is due.
Details
You can inspect early, but Transportstyrelsen says the time to the next inspection is always counted from the month of the latest inspection, so an early inspection does not keep the old deadline. You can check the due date by registration number, in the e-service Dina fordon or by sending bes. and the number to 71640. Book via auto repair and maintenance in Stockholm and see driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
Note the month of your last inspection and book well before the deadline month, because no reminder is sent.
What may differ
These rules are for passenger cars and lorries up to 3,500 kg in total weight, and other vehicle types have their own rules.
Common misconception
If you inspect early, the original deadline stays the same.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen says the time to the next inspection is always counted from the month of the latest inspection.
