How can you look up the owner of a car by registration number?
The SMS service and the other ways Transportstyrelsen offers.
Short answer
Send the registration number by SMS to 71640 and Transportstyrelsen replies with the vehicle's details and the owner's name and postal town, free apart from your mobile operator's fees. You can also call 0771-14 15 16 and say ägaruppgifter to reach an automatic service. The web search by registration number gives vehicle data.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says the SMS reply shows the registration number, vehicle type, make and model, status with date, and the owner's name and postal town.
- Transportstyrelsen says the SMS reply can also show special circumstances such as leasing, credit purchase, stolen, rental car or emergency vehicle.
- Transportstyrelsen says its web search lets you see basic vehicle data, inspection data, tax data and more technical information, and that the SMS services are free apart from operator fees.
Details
Send the registration number without spaces. The web search also accepts a personal plate. The SMS page was last updated on 31 August 2026. For checks before a purchase see driving and traffic rules in Sweden and parking and fines in Sweden.
Tip
Before you buy a car, compare the owner's name in the reply with the seller's, and note any marker such as leasing or credit purchase.
What may differ
For a leased car or a car bought on credit the reply carries a marker such as LEASING or KREDITKÖP, and for a car that is parked or deregistered the status and its date are shown.
Common misconception
You have to pay a lookup site to find out who owns a car.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen's own SMS service for owner details is free, and only your mobile operator's fees may apply.
