How much is vehicle tax in Sweden?
The formula for a passenger car and where it changes.
Short answer
A petrol car of model year 2006 or later pays SEK 360 a year plus SEK 22 per gram of CO2 per kilometre above 111, according to Transportstyrelsen. Diesel cars, cars on E85 or gas, cars in their first three years (malus) and older cars taxed by weight have other rules.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen gives the base amount as SEK 360 a year and the CO2 component as SEK 22 per gram of CO2 above 111 grams per kilometre.
- Transportstyrelsen says cars that can run on alternative fuels such as E85, natural gas or biogas pay SEK 11 per gram above 111, and that diesel cars pay a fuel supplement calculated by multiplying by the value 13.52.
- Transportstyrelsen says malus is a raised vehicle tax for the first three years for petrol and diesel passenger cars first registered on or after 1 July 2018.
Details
For example, a petrol car first registered before July 2018 that emits 150 g/km pays SEK 360 plus SEK 22 times 39 grams, which is SEK 1,218 a year, plus the road traffic register fee of SEK 74 a year. A car of model year 2005 or earlier that does not meet an environmental class is taxed by service weight. For the rules on payment see driving and traffic rules in Sweden and fuel stations in Stockholm.
