Can you drive a light motorcycle with a B licence?
What B covers, what A1 covers and the age limits.
Short answer
No, light motorcycles of up to 125 cc and 11 kW fall under category A1, which you can take from 16, not under B. A B licence covers cars up to 3.5 tonnes, light lorries, three- and four-wheeled motorcycles and, like every licence, class I mopeds (AM).
Why
- According to the Driving Licence Act, category A1 covers a light two- or three-wheeled motorcycle.
- According to the Act, category B lists cars up to 3.5 tonnes and light lorries, three-wheeled motorcycles and four-wheeled motorcycles, and every licence also gives AM.
- According to Transportstyrelsen, A1 covers two-wheeled motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, and the rider must be 16 and have a valid risk training for motorcycles.
Details
Practice driving on a light motorcycle can start at 15 years and 9 months with a group 1 permit. A and B give the right to drive a heavy three-wheeled motorcycle only from the age of 21. For shops that sell and service bikes, see motorcycle and scooter shops in Stockholm, and for the general rules see driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
A1 needs a valid risk training for motorcycles, so ask a driving school such as those in driving schools in Stockholm how to take A1 as an addition to B.
What may differ
This answer concerns Swedish licences under the Swedish Act. A foreign licence is valid in Sweden according to its content, so what it allows depends on the licence you hold.
Common misconception
A normal car licence lets you ride a 125 cc motorcycle.
What actually happens
In the Driving Licence Act, light motorcycles belong to category A1, while category B lists cars, light lorries and three- and four-wheeled motorcycles.
