Why

  1. According to the Driving Licence Act, the minimum age is 15 for AM, 16 for A1 and 18 for A2, B and BE.
  2. According to the Act, practice driving with a car without a trailer is allowed from 16, and according to Transportstyrelsen you need a körkortstillstånd, plus a supervisor if you practise privately.
  3. According to the Act, a foreign licence gives no right to drive a moped before 15 or a car before 18.

Details

Practice with a light lorry or a light trailer may start at 17 years and 6 months, according to Transportstyrelsen. With a driving school or another approved provider the permit is enough, and for private practice you also need an approved supervisor. See driving schools in Stockholm and driving and traffic rules in Sweden.

Tip

If you want to start practising at 16, apply for the körkortstillstånd first, because practice with a driving school also requires the permit.

What may differ

Transportstyrelsen says new EU rules will make it possible to take a B licence at 17 with accompanied driving, with the rules for accompanied driving starting on 26 November 2028. The current Swedish age limit for a B licence is 18.

Common misconception

You can drive a car alone from 16 in Sweden.

What actually happens

From 16 you may only practise, with a körkortstillstånd and a driving school or approved supervisor. The B licence requires age 18, according to the Driving Licence Act.
