Can you drive a moped without a licence in Sweden?
The two moped classes, what each needs and the age exception.
Short answer
Mostly no, because a class I moped needs an AM licence or another driving licence, and a class II moped needs a licence or a förarbevis. Transportstyrelsen exempts riders born before 1 October 1994 from the förarbevis, and AM can be taken from age 15.
Why
- According to Transportstyrelsen, a class I moped is built for at most 45 km/h and needs an AM licence unless you hold a licence in another category.
- According to Transportstyrelsen, a class II moped is built for at most 25 km/h and needs a förarbevis, unless you hold a driving licence or tractor licence or were born before 1 October 1994.
- According to the Driving Licence Act, every licence category also gives AM, and a class I moped may be driven only by someone with a valid licence for it.
Details
For a förarbevis for a class II moped you take training and a test with an approved provider and pay the manufacturing fee of SEK 375. The theory test for AM has 70 questions and a test time of 50 minutes, according to Trafikverket. For scooters and bikes see motorcycle and scooter shops in Stockholm, and for general rules see driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
Check how the moped is registered before you ride, because Transportstyrelsen says a moped registered as class II needs a förarbevis, while a class I moped needs a licence.
What may differ
Age matters: an AM licence requires age 15, and the practical parts of the training can start at 14 years and 9 months with a permit. A foreign licence gives no right to ride a moped before 15.
Common misconception
Mopeds do not need any licence.
What actually happens
The Driving Licence Act requires a valid licence for a class I moped, and a class II moped may be driven only with a licence, a tractor licence or a förarbevis.
