What is the speed limit for buses in Sweden?
Maximum speeds for buses under the Swedish Traffic Ordinance.
Short answer
A heavy bus may drive at most 100 km/h in Sweden if everyone over three on board has a seat with a seat belt, otherwise 90 km/h. A bus with more than one articulated section is limited to 60 km/h, and so is a bus towing a passenger trailer. The posted speed limit on the road still applies.
Why
- According to the Traffic Ordinance (4 kap. 20 §), a heavy bus may be driven at 100 km/h if all passengers older than three have access to a seat with a seat belt.
- The same paragraph of the Traffic Ordinance sets 90 km/h for a heavy bus in other cases and 60 km/h for a bus with more than one articulated section.
- Transportstyrelsen says every bus passenger older than three must sit in a seat with a seat belt, if one is available, and use the belt.
Details
A heavy bus (tung buss) is a bus with a total weight above 3.5 tonnes, according to the Act on road traffic definitions. The figures are the most the vehicle may do: on a road with a lower posted limit, that limit applies. A new wording of the paragraph takes effect on 1 December 2026, and its bus figures are the same. For other road rules, see driving and road rules in Sweden.
Tip
If you ride a coach rather than drive one, buckle up: Transportstyrelsen says passengers older than three must use the belt where a belted seat is available. Bus stops and terminals near you are listed under bus stops and bus terminals in Stockholm.
What may differ
The speed depends on the seat belts on board: if even one passenger older than three has no access to a belted seat, a heavy bus is limited to 90 km/h instead of 100 km/h.
Common misconception
Every bus in Sweden may drive 100 km/h.
What actually happens
Only a heavy bus where everyone older than three has access to a belted seat may do 100 km/h, according to the Traffic Ordinance. Otherwise the limit is 90 km/h, and 60 km/h for an articulated bus with more than one articulated section.
