What is the speed limit in Sweden?

The base speeds, the steps between 30 and 120 km/h and the motorway maximum.

Short answer

Speed limits in Sweden run from 30 km/h up to 120 km/h on motorways, with a base speed of 50 km/h in built-up areas and 70 km/h outside them. Signs can set the limit in ten steps between 30 and 120 km/h, and the posted limit applies. A heavy bus has its own maximum speeds.

Why

  1. Visit Sweden says speed limits vary between 30 km/h in residential areas and up to 120 km/h on motorways, and that drivers should always follow posted signs.
  2. The Traffic Ordinance (3 kap. 17 §) sets 50 km/h within built-up areas and 70 km/h outside them (base speed).
  3. According to Trafikverket, since 2008 limits can be set in all ten steps between 30 and 120 km/h.

Details

NTF says the speed on a motorway can vary up to a maximum of 120 km/h. A heavy bus may drive at most 100 km/h if everyone older than three has a belted seat, otherwise 90 km/h, and an articulated bus with more than one articulated section 60 km/h, according to the Traffic Ordinance (4 kap. 20 §). For other road rules, see driving and road rules in Sweden.

Tip

Follow the posted signs rather than assuming a limit, since the sign sets the speed on each stretch. For longer drives, see road trips in Sweden.

What may differ

Heavy buses have their own maximum speeds, and the wording of the bus paragraph changes on 1 December 2026 with the same figures.
