How do you transfer ownership of a car in Sweden?
Who reports the change, how, and what the buyer must arrange.
Short answer
The seller reports the change of owner to Transportstyrelsen in Mina sidor with e-ID or on part 2 of the paper registration certificate, which must arrive within 10 days. Mina sidor registers the change the same day, but you cannot choose a date. The buyer needs traffic insurance from the transfer date if the car is registered as in use.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says it is the seller who must log in to the e-service, and that the seller needs an e-ID.
- Transportstyrelsen says a paper report must reach it within 10 days of the transfer, otherwise the arrival date is registered as the date of the change.
- Transportstyrelsen says a car that is registered as in use needs traffic insurance from the change date, and without it the buyer is reported to Trafikförsäkringsföreningen and charged a trafikförsäkringsavgift.
Details
In Mina sidor both parties must be over 18 and hold a valid Swedish driving licence. On paper, the original and latest registration certificate goes to Transportstyrelsen, 701 81 Örebro, with the sale date, the buyer's personal or organisation number, name and address, and both signatures. If the change happens in the month the vehicle tax is due, the tax obligation does not move to the buyer. For the wider rules around cars see driving and traffic rules in Sweden, and for dealers see car dealerships in Stockholm.
Tip
Check the buyer's identity, post the paper form yourself and keep a copy, and agree who arranges the insurance for the transfer date.
What may differ
Since 1 April 2026 a car dealer taking a car in part exchange only needs the control number from the registration certificate. If the car is leaving Sweden for good, the seller must report it as deregistered, and a leasing company must approve the transfer of a leased car.
Common misconception
The new owner is registered automatically when the car is paid for and the keys are handed over.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen requires a report of the change, and a paper report that arrives late gets its arrival date registered as the date of the change.
