What does Transportstyrelsen's trailer calculator show?

What you enter, what green, yellow and red mean, and what the tool cannot check.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Transportstyrelsen's trailer calculator tells you whether your car may tow a specific trailer or caravan, based on the registration numbers of both and your driving licence class. Each vehicle is marked green (allowed), yellow (allowed with limits) or red (not allowed). The tool is only an aid, and the driver remains responsible for driving legally.

Why

  1. Transportstyrelsen says you enter the registration numbers of the car and the trailer and your licence class: B, extended B (code 96) or BE.
  2. According to Transportstyrelsen, green means the vehicle may be driven, red means it may not, and yellow means it may be driven with limits, for example that the trailer may not be fully loaded.
  3. Transportstyrelsen says the calculator works only for cars and light lorries, and that a green result does not mean all other requirements are met.

Details

The calculator does not take every type of coupling into account, does not show how the trailer should be loaded, and does not show whether the car has a tow bar or what type of gearbox it has. Transportstyrelsen also says it sometimes lacks brake data for trailers, and then the result rests on assumptions. If your licence was issued abroad, see how foreign driving licences work in Sweden; for other rules, see driving and road rules in Sweden.

Tip

Compare the result with the registration certificate of each vehicle, which has separate fields for the maximum weight of a braked and an unbraked trailer, according to Transportstyrelsen.

What may differ

The calculator covers cars and light lorries and the licence classes B, extended B (code 96) and BE. Other vehicle types are not covered by the tool.

Common misconception

A green result in the trailer calculator means the combination is fully legal.

What actually happens

Transportstyrelsen says that a green vehicle does not necessarily meet all other requirements, and that the driver is still responsible for driving lawfully.
