How much is the vehicle tax for electric cars in Sweden?
How the CO2-based formula works for electric cars and where to see the exact amount.
Short answer
Cars in environmental class el are taxed on their CO2 emissions, and the formula starts from a base amount of SEK 360 a year, according to Transportstyrelsen. The CO2 part counts only grams above 111 g/km, so a car with no CO2 emissions has no CO2 part to add.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says passenger cars of model year 2006 or later, and older cars that meet the requirements for environmental class el, are taxed on their CO2 emissions.
- Transportstyrelsen gives the CO2-based tax as a base amount of SEK 360 a year plus SEK 22 per gram of CO2 above 111 g per kilometre.
- Riksdagen's text of the Road Traffic Tax Act (2006:227) says the base amount is SEK 360 for a tax year and the CO2 amount is SEK 22 per gram above 111 grams per kilometre.
Details
The CO2 value comes from the road traffic register, and the exact tax for a specific car is shown in the e-service Fordonets skulder. The tax is paid in the month set by the last digit of the registration number. Owners of a class I passenger car in certain rural municipalities get a deduction of SEK 384 a year. See driving and traffic rules in Sweden and fuel stations, including electric charging, in Stockholm.
Tip
Look up the amount for your own car in Fordonets skulder or ask Transportstyrelsen on 0771-14 15 16, instead of relying on a general figure.
What may differ
Cars of model year 2005 or earlier that do not meet an environmental class are taxed by service weight, and cars that can run on E85, natural gas or biogas pay SEK 11 instead of SEK 22 per gram above 111, according to Transportstyrelsen.
Common misconception
Electric cars pay no vehicle tax in Sweden.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen lists passenger cars as taxable, and its list of vehicles that are not taxable, such as mopeds, snowmobiles and passenger cars of 30 years or older, does not name electric cars.
