What does 2x mean on a car inspection?
How 2x, 2 and 3 differ and what each one means for you.
Short answer
A 2x on the inspection protocol means a simple fault that must be fixed promptly but does not require a re-inspection, according to Bilprovningen. More than four 2x faults, or a 2x fault that was not fixed after the previous inspection, do lead to a re-inspection. A 2 requires a re-inspection and a 3 means a driving ban.
Why
- Bilprovningen says a 2x fault is simple from an environmental or traffic-safety point of view and calls for no re-inspection, but the owner must fix it promptly.
- Bilprovningen says a vehicle with more than four faults assessed as 2x, or a fault that was not fixed, needs a re-inspection.
- Bilprovningen says a 2 means the fault is not simple and a re-inspection is required, and a 3 means the vehicle cannot be used without obvious danger to traffic safety, in other words a driving ban.
Details
Besikta says a 2x fault that is still there at the next inspection can become a 2 or even lead to a driving ban. Transportstyrelsen says that defects that stop approval but do not call for a driving ban lead to an order to return for a re-inspection (efterkontroll) within a set time, or you can use an accredited workshop that sends a certificate. See auto repair and maintenance services in Stockholm and driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
Keep the protocol, note which faults are marked 2x and fix them soon, because an unfixed 2x counts again at the next inspection.
What may differ
The time to re-inspect differs: Bilprovningen says a vehicle that is not re-inspected in time normally gets a driving ban after one month, and after a third failed inspection in a row you have only one week.
Common misconception
A 2x means the car failed its inspection.
What actually happens
Bilprovningen says a 2x needs no re-inspection, only that the fault is fixed promptly; it is the 2 and the 3 that mean a re-inspection or a driving ban.
