Short answer

Congestion tax in Stockholm is not charged on weekends, public holidays or most days before a holiday, and in July only the first five weekdays are charged. On other weekdays the tax applies only between 06:00 and 18:29, according to the Swedish Tax Agency and the Swedish Transport Agency.

Why

  1. No tax is charged on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, according to the Swedish Tax Agency.
  2. The day before a public holiday is free, except before Good Friday, Ascension Day, All Saints' Day, 1 May and the National Day, according to the Swedish Tax Agency.
  3. In July tax is charged only on the first five weekdays of the month, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.

Details

The Swedish Transport Agency lists these dates as free in 2026: 1 January, 5–6 January, 3 April, 6 April, 1 May, 14 May, 19 June, 24–25 December and 31 December. For the days before 1 May and the National Day, the tax is charged when they fall on a weekday. For hours and amounts, see the congestion tax basics, and for parking see how many minutes over the time you can park in Stockholm.

Tip

Do not assume the day before every holiday is free: Ascension Day and All Saints' Day are among the holidays whose preceding day is charged as a normal weekday.

What may differ

Gothenburg has its own rules: no tax on weekends, public holidays, the day before a public holiday or in the whole of July, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.

Common misconception

There is no congestion tax at all in Stockholm in July.

What actually happens

Tax is charged on the first five weekdays of July, according to both the Swedish Tax Agency and the Swedish Transport Agency.
