When are studded tyres allowed in Sweden?
The dates, the winter condition exception and the rule on mixing tyres.
Short answer
Studded tyres are allowed in Sweden from 1 October to 15 April, and outside those dates only when winter road conditions exist or are expected, according to Transportstyrelsen. Cars and light lorries may not mix studded and non-studded tyres, and a trailer must have studded tyres if the towing car has them.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says it is permitted to use studded tyres between 1 October and 15 April.
- According to Transportstyrelsen, studded tyres may also be used before or after that period if there is or is expected to be winter road condition.
- Transportstyrelsen says that from 16 April driving with studded tyres is not allowed unless winter road conditions remain or may return.
Details
Winter road conditions mean snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road, and the police decide whether they exist where you are, according to Transportstyrelsen. Some streets in Stockholm have a ban on studded tyres all year, and the City of Stockholm lists Hornsgatan, Fleminggatan and part of Kungsgatan. Tip
Check the weather before you change tyres in April, since studded tyres may still be used after 15 April if winter road conditions exist or are expected. A trailer needs studded tyres if the towing car has them.
What may differ
Heavy lorries and heavy buses may not mix studded and non-studded tyres on the same axle, according to Transportstyrelsen.
Common misconception
Studded tyres are banned everywhere in Sweden after 15 April, whatever the weather.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen says studded tyres may also be used before or after the period if there is or is expected to be winter road condition.
