Do rental cars in Sweden come with winter tyres?
What Enterprise, Hertz and Avis say about winter tyres on rental cars.
Short answer
Enterprise says winter rentals in Sweden come with the right tyres, but Hertz and Avis say winter tyres may need to be requested or added for a fee. Cars need winter tyres from 1 December to 31 March in winter road conditions, and Enterprise says a car rented near those dates may have them, but this is not guaranteed.
Why
- Enterprise says winter tyres are mandatory in Sweden, so a car rented in the winter period will be equipped with the right tyres.
- Hertz says you may need studless winter tyres, which must be requested in advance where you rent the car, and that its Swedish rental cars can have studded tyres between 1 October and 30 April.
- Avis says that if the pick-up station is in an area where driving without winter tyres is illegal, the car automatically gets them and the fee is included, and that it can otherwise deliver winter tyres for a fee.
Details
Avis lists winter tyres, snow chains and studded tyres as winter equipment in Sweden. According to Transportstyrelsen, winter road conditions mean snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road. For the national rules, see winter tyres and studs in Sweden, for the dates see when winter starts in Sweden, and for rental offices see car rental in Stockholm.
Tip
When you book a winter rental, ask which tyres the car will have, studless or studded, and whether a fee applies. Hertz says studless tyres must be requested in advance, and Avis says winter tyres can be added for a fee.
What may differ
The tyres depend on the company, the pick-up location and the date, because the three companies describe different arrangements.
Common misconception
Rental companies in Sweden always fit winter tyres for you in winter.
What actually happens
Enterprise says a car rented close to 1 December or 31 March may already have winter tyres but this is not a guarantee, and Hertz says studless winter tyres must be requested in advance.
