Which is the best internet provider in Sweden?
Why there is no single best provider, and what to check instead.
Short answer
The best internet provider depends on which providers and technologies are available at your address, so there is no single answer for all of Sweden. PTS points to its Bredbandskartan map to see who delivers broadband to an area, and Telekområdgivarna says it represents neither consumers nor operators.
Why
- According to PTS, homeowners can check Bredbandskartan to find out whether there is broadband in their area, and people in flats should ask the landlord or housing association what exists in the building.
- Telekområdgivarna, which is financed by participating operators, states that it represents neither consumers nor operators.
- Bredbandskollen, run by the foundation Internetstiftelsen, says a good measurement result is around 80–85 percent of the maximum speed in your plan.
Details
Telekområdgivarna is a non-profit service owned by TechSverige, and representatives of the Swedish Consumer Agency and PTS sit on its board. Its glossary describes an open fibre network as one where several competing service providers can offer their services, so on such a network you may be able to choose between providers. For companies in the directory, see the directory of telecom and internet providers in Stockholm, and for other monthly costs read what the cost of living in Sweden looks like.
Tip
Compare the monthly price, the speed and the binding period before you sign: for consumer contracts the binding period may be at most 24 months, according to the Swedish Consumer Agency. Once connected, test your real speed with Bredbandskollen.
What may differ
Homeowners can check Bredbandskartan and contact the network owner or a service provider, while people in flats depend on what the landlord or housing association has arranged for the building.
Common misconception
The speed in the plan name is the speed you will get at all times.
What actually happens
Telekområdgivarna says a contract should explain minimum, normal and maximum speeds, and that normal speed is what you can expect most of the time.
