What is the difference between fibre, coax and 5G broadband?
How the three ways of getting home internet differ.
Short answer
Fibre is a wired connection on optical cables, coax is a cable network that delivers TV and broadband, and 5G is a wireless connection over a mobile network. According to Telekområdgivarna, fibre often gives 100 to 1000 Mbit/s or more and is not affected by weather, while 5G is affected by buildings and weather.
Why
- According to PTS, fibre gives high capacity but needs new cables to be laid, while an existing cable-TV connection can in some cases be used to get fast broadband.
- Telekområdgivarna says 5G has very high speed that can compete with fibre in some cases, but that its coverage is limited outside larger cities.
- Tele2 says on its own site that a FiberKoax address is connected to its cable network and that it delivers broadband of up to 2500 Mbit/s through FiberKoax.
Details
The building decides a lot. Tele2 says the difference between a FiberKoax and a FiberLAN address is the type of connection to the home, with a coax outlet for the first and LAN outlets or a media converter for the second. With 5G there is no cable to the building at all, but the operator must have coverage at your address. To compare what is sold where you live, see the directory of telecom and internet providers in Stockholm, and for general living costs read what the cost of living in Sweden looks like.
Tip
Ask your landlord or housing association which connection the building has, as PTS advises, and check the operators' 5G coverage maps for your address before you decide.
What may differ
What you can order depends on your address and building: homeowners can check PTS's Bredbandskartan and then contact the network owner or a service provider, while people in flats should ask the landlord or housing association.
Common misconception
Coax is old technology that cannot give fast broadband.
What actually happens
Tele2 says it delivers broadband of up to 2500 Mbit/s through FiberKoax, although the speed you can order depends on what is prepared in your property.
