Vårdcentral and healthcare in Sweden: a practical guide
The vårdcentral (local health centre) is your first point of contact when it is not an emergency. You choose which one to belong to, called listning (registering), and you see and change your choice by logging in at 1177.se. In Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne a doctor's visit at your vårdcentral costs 200–275 kronor in 2026, and you pay at most 1 450 kronor in patient fees over twelve months. This guide explains how the system works and is not medical advice.
How primary care and listning work
Healthcare is run by the regions. So fees and some routines differ between Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne, while the basic rules are the same nationwide.
A vårdcentral sees children and adults for problems that are not urgent or life-threatening, such as infections, allergies and chronic conditions. In Stockholm it is also called a husläkarmottagning.
Listning means that you choose to belong to one vårdcentral. According to 1177 you can register anywhere in Sweden, at one clinic at a time, and where you are registered you should be given the chance to choose a regular doctor. You must be folkbokförd (entered in the Swedish population register) to register. In Stockholm children are not registered automatically at your vårdcentral. As their guardian you choose for them too.
Which vårdcentral do I belong to?
Log in at 1177.se. In Stockholm the heading Vårdval shows whether you are registered at a clinic; in Västra Götaland it is shown under the heading Vårdcentral.
If you have not chosen yourself
In Västra Götaland you are registered automatically at the vårdcentral closest to your registered address, and in Skåne at the one closest to where you live. In Stockholm nothing happens automatically: if you have just moved there you are olistad (unregistered) until you choose.
Can you go to a different vårdcentral?
Yes, you can temporarily seek care at a vårdcentral other than your own, says 1177. In Stockholm you can still be referred to your own vårdcentral if the problem is not judged to be urgent. In Västra Götaland the doctor's visit costs 300 kronor at another vårdcentral, against 200 kronor at your own.

Switching vårdcentral step by step
You switch by making a new choice at 1177.se. These are the steps 1177 gives for Stockholm. In Västra Götaland the button is called Ändra vårdval.
- Step 1: Log in at 1177.se.
- Step 2: Click Välj/ändra vårdval (choose or change).
- Step 3: Choose region and municipality.
- Step 4: Choose the vårdcentral you want to switch to.
- Step 5: Accept the terms and confirm.
How long does it take?
In the e-service the switch is immediate: your choice is complete when you see the confirmation on the screen, says 1177 for Stockholm. If you cannot log in, hand in a paper form to the vårdcentral you want to join. In Stockholm you show your ID when you hand it in. 1177 states no processing time for the form, so ask at the clinic.
How often can you switch?
At most twice in a twelve-month period, unless you have special reasons. An example from 1177 for Skåne: if you switch on 13 October, you can switch once more up to 12 October the following year. In Västra Götaland, moving there from another region or another country is a special reason.
Booking an appointment at the vårdcentral
You book at 1177.se, by telephone or in the region's digital service. What is available depends on the clinic.
At 1177.se
- Step 1: Log in and go to Start och översikt (start and overview).
- Step 2: Click Boka ny tid (book a new appointment).
- Step 3: Choose the clinic. If it is missing, click Hitta och lägg till mottagning at the bottom of the page.
By telephone
You can always phone your vårdcentral, says 1177 for Skåne. In Stockholm the health centres are open at least 8–17 every weekday. If you do not know where to turn, ring 1177, where a nurse answers at any time of day or night.
Apps and digital visits
In Stockholm the service is called Alltid öppet. It exists as an app and on the web, and you log in with BankID or Freja+. Depending on the clinic you can book appointments, chat and have video meetings. In Skåne you can seek care digitally at most health centres, and in Västra Götaland many clinics offer digital appointments. A video visit costs the same as a visit in person.
Cancel in good time if you cannot come. In Stockholm and Skåne a missed appointment costs 400 kronor.
What does healthcare cost in 2026?
Each region sets its own fees, so the amounts differ. The table shows what adults pay in 2026 in Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne according to 1177. Where it says not listed on 1177, the amount was not in the region's fee list when we checked.
| Fee 2026 | Stockholm | Västra Götaland | Skåne |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doctor's visit at a vårdcentral | 275 kr | 200 kr (300 kr) | 200 kr |
| Visit to a specialist doctor | 275 kr | 300 kr, first visit after referral 100 kr | 200 kr |

High-cost protection and frikort
With högkostnadsskydd you pay at most 1 450 kronor in patient fees over twelve months, in all three regions. Once you have reached the amount you get a frikort (free card), and visits cost nothing for the rest of the period. The ceiling covers outpatient care.

Ambulance and akuten: what it costs
In an emergency ring 112, and ring 1177 if you need advice on when and where to seek care.
What the ambulance costs depends on the region. In Stockholm, ambulance care is on the list of free care. In Västra Götaland ambulance transport costs 150 kronor, and 300 kronor when the care is completed on the spot. A visit to a närakut (urgent care clinic) in Stockholm costs 375 kronor and to a jourcentral (out-of-hours clinic) in Västra Götaland 300 kronor. The jourcentral is open when the vårdcentral is closed.
Dental care: when you start paying and how to change dentist
Dental care (tandvård) is free up to and including the year you turn 19. From 1 January of the year you turn 20 you pay yourself, according to 1177. The rule applies in 2026 across the whole country and was introduced on 1 January 2025, when the age limit was lowered from 23 to 19.
Prices are not regulated, so dentists and dental hygienists set their own. From the year you turn 20 you receive allmänt tandvårdsbidrag, a general dental care allowance: 600 kronor a year up to and including the year you turn 23, then 300 kronor a year up to and including the year you turn 65. From the year you turn 67 it is 600 kronor a year again, and if you turn 66 during 2026 you get 600 kronor this year, according to Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency).
How to change dentist
You can change dentist or dental hygienist whenever you like, even during ongoing treatment, says 1177.
- Step 1: Choose a new clinic and book an appointment there.
- Step 2: Ask the new dentist to request a copy of your records from the previous clinic. They do not follow you automatically.
- Step 3: If you want the records yourself, ask for a copy. It usually costs nothing, according to 1177.
