How much does it cost to drive a car per mil (10 km)?

A simple formula, a worked example and where to find a car's consumption.

Short answer

Fuel cost per mil is the litres your car uses per mil multiplied by the price per litre, and one mil is 10 kilometres. With an assumed 0.6 litres per mil, St1's list price of petrol 95 on 28 October 2026 gives about SEK 10.58 per mil. Your own consumption decides the real figure.

Why

  1. Nationalencyklopedin defines a modern Swedish mil as 10 km, or 10,000 m, so fuel consumption in Sweden is often counted per mil.
  2. St1 lists petrol 95 at SEK 17.64 and diesel at SEK 23.84 per litre including VAT in its list prices valid on 28 October 2026.
  3. Konsumentverket publishes a yearly list of all passenger car models with each car's fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and list price.

Details

The 0.6 litres per mil is an assumption for the example, not a measured figure, so replace it with the consumption of your own car. Preem lists the same petrol 95 and diesel prices from 27 October 2026 and E85 is listed by St1 at SEK 15.09 per litre. Station prices can differ, see fuel stations in Stockholm. For other running costs see the cost of living in Sweden and driving and traffic rules in Sweden.

Tip

Take the litres per 100 km from the car's specification, divide by 10 to get litres per mil, and multiply by the price on the price sign at your station.

What may differ

Fuel is only one part of running a car, because vehicle tax, insurance, inspection and service come on top.
