How much does it cost to import a car into Sweden?
The fees and taxes that official sources state, and what they leave open.
Short answer
The origin check (ursprungskontroll) that starts every car import costs SEK 1,240 at Transportstyrelsen, and VAT of 25 percent applies to cars from outside the EU. Customs duty applies there too, and a new car from another EU country carries Swedish VAT while a used one is taxed in the country of purchase.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen lists the fee for an origin check (ursprungskontroll) at SEK 1,240 on a fee page last updated on 1 January 2026.
- According to Skatteverket, you pay customs duty and VAT on a car brought in from outside the EU, the VAT is 25 percent and Tullverket is the taxing authority.
- Skatteverket says a new car from another EU country (bought within six months of first use or driven no more than 6,000 km) is taxed with 25 percent Swedish VAT, while a used car carries VAT in the country where you buy it.
Details
After the origin check the car goes to a registration inspection (registreringsbesiktning) with the original documents. Transportstyrelsen's pages state no price for that inspection and no customs duty rate, so ask an inspection company for a quote and Tullverket about duty on your car. For a related question on customs see customs on online orders, and for the rules once the car is registered see driving and traffic rules in Sweden.
Tip
Before you buy abroad, add up the origin-check fee, VAT, any customs duty, the registration inspection quoted by an inspection company and the first vehicle tax.
What may differ
Cars from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway follow the EU registration rules but customs and VAT still apply, and cars from the United Kingdom also need a customs document, according to Transportstyrelsen.
Common misconception
A car bought in another EU country can be registered in Sweden without any import steps.
What actually happens
Transportstyrelsen says the first step in the registration process is to apply for an origin check, and the car also goes through a registration inspection.
