Do you pay customs when ordering from Amazon to Sweden?

Why the dispatch country matters, and what VAT, duty and fees apply to parcels from outside the EU.

Short answer

Amazon orders sent from inside the EU carry no fees to Swedish Customs, while parcels sent from outside the EU always carry VAT. Since 1 July 2026 a customs duty of EUR 3 per item also applies to parcels worth EUR 150 or less. Above EUR 150 the duty is a percentage of the value.

Why

  1. According to Swedish Customs, when you order goods within the EU you pay no fees to Swedish Customs.
  2. Swedish Customs says VAT is always due on goods ordered from outside the EU, at 25 per cent for most goods and 6 per cent for foodstuffs and printed books.
  3. Swedish Customs says that from 1 July 2026 a customs duty of EUR 3 per item applies to parcels worth EUR 150 or less, and above that the duty runs from nothing up to 20 per cent of the value.

Details

VAT is calculated on the price, freight and customs duty together. Swedish Customs also says a handling fee is due from 1 November 2026 on all online purchases sent from outside the EU, whatever the value. When Swedish Customs' page was checked, the fee was not formally set but was described as highly likely to be EUR 2. The transport company, for example PostNord, usually invoices the charges after the parcel reaches Sweden and may add its own fee.

Tip

Check the dispatch country on the order page before you pay. Swedish Customs says an item bought from an EU company but shipped from outside the EU is treated as a purchase from outside the EU.

What may differ

Alcohol, tobacco and nicotine products can carry excise duty even when ordered within the EU. Swedish Customs also says alcohol may not be bought online from a country outside the EU.
