How much does it cost to own a car in Sweden per month?
Which cost items exist and which figures are published.
Short answer
The monthly cost of owning a car in Sweden depends on the car and how far you drive, and Konsumentverket's household cost calculations for 2026 do not include transport. You can build the figure yourself from vehicle tax, traffic insurance, inspection, service and fuel, then divide the yearly total by twelve.
Why
- Konsumentverket says that major costs not included in its household calculations are housing and transport, so it gives no monthly car figure.
- Transportstyrelsen sets vehicle tax with a base amount of SEK 360 a year plus SEK 22 per gram of CO2 above 111 g/km, and charges a road traffic register fee of SEK 74 a year for a car.
- Trafikanalys reports that a Swedish-registered passenger car drove 1,243 mil on average in 2025, about 12,430 km, and St1 lists petrol 95 at SEK 17.64 per litre on 28 October 2026.
Details
As an illustration with an assumed use of 0.6 litres of petrol per mil, 1,243 mil a year at SEK 17.64 per litre comes to about SEK 13,150 a year in fuel, or about SEK 1,100 a month. Inspection and service come on top, see the prices in the inspection and service answers. Konsumentverket also publishes a yearly list of all passenger car models with fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and list price. For general living costs see the cost of living in Sweden, and for insurers see insurance companies in Stockholm.
Tip
Use your own yearly distance in mil and the fuel use of your car model, and get a traffic insurance quote for your registration number before you decide.
What may differ
The vehicle tax formula above is the petrol one: diesel cars have their own fuel-based surcharge, and cars running on E85 or gas pay half the CO2 amount, according to Transportstyrelsen.
