How do you switch mobile plan in Sweden?

Steps, timing and the rules on binding and notice periods.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You switch mobile plan in Sweden by ordering the new plan and asking the new operator to move your number, without cancelling the old one yourself. Tele2 and Comviq say not to cancel, and PTS says to settle any notice period or unpaid invoices with your current operator first.

Why

  1. According to PTS, you contact the new operator, which contacts your current operator, and you can check which operator a number belongs to in PTS's service Sök operatör.
  2. Tele2 says moving a number usually takes about 14 days, Comviq says about 10 days, and Tre says 5-7 working days.
  3. According to Konsumentverket, a consumer contract may have a binding period of at most 24 months and, for contracts from 1 May 2014, a notice period of at most one month.

Details

Tele2, Comviq and Tre all require that the number is registered in your name and that you have no binding period, otherwise the move may be refused. A locked phone must be unlocked first, which PTS says can cost something if the lock period has not ended. New to Sweden? Tip

Before you order, check when your binding period ends and that the number is in your name. Until the move happens you keep using your current operator and get an SMS with the exact date.

What may differ

The number can be moved from a prepaid card too: PTS says you can take a mobile number with you whether you have a subscription or a kontantkort. Comviq says a number held by someone else must first be transferred to you.

Common misconception

You must cancel your old plan first, or you lose your number.

What actually happens

Tele2 and Comviq tell you not to cancel, because they handle the move with your current operator, and PTS says you have the right to keep your number for at least one month after the agreement has ended.
