How do I apply for a Sweden Schengen visa?
Where to apply, how early, which documents and what the visa allows.
Short answer
You apply for a Schengen visa outside Sweden, at a Swedish embassy or at VFS Global in many countries, up to six months before your visit. Bring a valid passport, the application form, proof of SEK 700 per day and proof that you will leave the Schengen area before the visa expires.
Why
- According to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), in many countries Sweden has an agreement with the external provider VFS Global, which receives Schengen visa applications.
- Migrationsverket says you can apply at the earliest six months before your visit, and the application must be submitted outside Sweden.
- According to Migrationsverket, a Schengen visa gives at most 90 days within a period of 180 days, and the passport must be valid at least three months after the visa expires.
Details
In some countries you apply at a Swedish embassy or consulate general, and in others another Schengen country handles applications on Sweden's behalf. If you visit several Schengen countries, apply to the embassy of your main destination. Migrationsverket also lists an individual medical travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000 as recommended, and the purpose of the visit decides which extra documents you need.
Tip
Choose your country on the Migrationsverket page to see exactly where and how to apply, and book through the embassy's own page, since a Swedish embassy site warns against people who sell visa services.
What may differ
The documents depend on the purpose of the visit. For a visit to friends or family, your host completes an invitation form, while business, tourism, medical treatment and other purposes each have their own requirements.
