How much cash can you take into or out of Sweden without declaring it?

The EUR 10,000 reporting level, what counts as cash and how to report it.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You must notify Swedish Customs when you carry cash or equivalent assets worth EUR 10,000 or more into or out of Sweden. Since 1 April 2026 this also covers trips to or from other EU countries. Reporting is free, has no age limit and can be done online beforehand or on a paper form at the border.

Why

  1. According to Swedish Customs, you have to notify it if you carry the equivalent of EUR 10,000 or more in cash or equivalent assets.
  2. Swedish Customs says the duty to report also applies when you travel to or from another EU country, with the date given as 1 April 2026.
  3. Swedish Customs counts notes and coins, traveller's cheques, cheques, promissory notes, investment gold of at least 99.5 per cent and gold coins of at least 90 per cent as cash or equivalent assets.

Details

Swedish Customs offers an online service for reporting. If you report online you generally do not need to contact customs at the border, but you should show your registration number and other documents if an officer asks. The alternative is the paper form called Cash declaration, which you give to a customs officer at the border. Forms can also be collected at customs offices.

Tip

Report online before you travel and keep the registration number with you, so you can show it if customs asks.

What may differ

Swedish Customs says there is no age limit, so the duty to report applies to children and adults alike.

Common misconception

You are not allowed to carry more than EUR 10,000 in cash.

What actually happens

EUR 10,000 is the level at which you must notify Swedish Customs, not a ban. Swedish Customs asks for a notification from that amount.
