Do Americans need a visa to visit Sweden?

The 90-day rule for US passport holders, passport validity, EES and ETIAS.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

No, US citizens may enter Sweden for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa, because Sweden is part of the Schengen area. The 90 days run in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. The US State Department advises a passport valid at least six months beyond your stay.

Why

  1. According to the US State Department, US citizens may enter Sweden for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa.
  2. The Swedish Government's list of countries whose citizens need a visa for Sweden does not include the United States.
  3. According to the Swedish Police, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has operated since 12 October 2025 and registers travel documents, a face photo and fingerprints of non-EU travellers.

Details

Migrationsverket says border police check visa-exempt visitors for a passport valid at least three months after they leave the Schengen area, a return ticket, an invitation or hotel booking, and SEK 700 for each day of the visit. ETIAS, the online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not yet in operation: the Swedish Police say the EU has not yet decided the start date, and the European Commission says it is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026.

Tip

Check how many days you have already spent in other Schengen countries, because the 90 days are shared, and carry proof of your return ticket, accommodation and funds for the border check.
