How does tax free shopping on the Eckerö Linjen ferry work?
What the on-board shop sells and which allowances apply when you return to Sweden.
Short answer
Eckerö Linjen sells tax free goods on board, and Swedish Customs applies the rules for travel from outside the EU to goods you bring back from Åland. For alcohol that means 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified wine, 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer, with a 20-hour threshold for the exemption.
Why
- According to Eckerö Linjen, its on-board tax free shop is called Magasin Märket and sells spirits, liqueurs, wine, sparkling wine, beer, cosmetics and sweets.
- Swedish Customs says Åland is part of the EU but outside the EU fiscal territory, so no customs duty applies but tax does, under the same rules as travel from a non-EU country.
- Swedish Customs says that for alcohol bought on a ferry via Åland to be exempt from excise duty, you must have been abroad for more than 20 hours.
Details
Eckerö Linjen's import rules page lists the same amounts for journeys of at least 20 hours: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, and other goods up to SEK 5,000 in total. Age limits for goods brought to Sweden are 20 for alcohol and 18 for tobacco. Goods above the allowance must be declared in the red lane and taxed.
Tip
Plan your purchases around the allowance and the length of the trip, and read Eckerö Linjen's import rules page before you shop.
What may differ
For snus the amount depends on the length of the trip: under 20 hours abroad you may bring 100 grams, and at 20 hours or more the same duty-free amount as from a non-EU country applies.
