How do I get a Swedish passport?

The steps from booking to collection, and who can apply.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

A Swedish citizen gets a passport by booking a time with the Swedish Police and applying in person, with photo, fingerprints and fee handled at the passport office. Once the application is approved it usually takes about a week before the passport is ready. You collect it yourself at a passport office.

Why

  1. Only Swedish citizens can get a Swedish passport or national ID card, according to the Swedish Police.
  2. At the appointment the passport officer takes a photograph and two fingerprints, and you pay the fee, according to the Swedish Police.
  3. A passport or ID card takes about 6 working days to be ready, and you cannot collect it for someone else even with a power of attorney, according to the Swedish Police.

Details

Book a time through Mina sidor, bring a valid Swedish ID document and your old passport if it is still valid, and pay the fee at the office (SEK 500 for a passport). Pickup needs no booking: you go to a passport office during opening hours. For a child, all guardians must give their consent.

Tip

Apply well before your trip, because the Police say waiting times for new travel documents have been unusually long.

What may differ

If you are not a Swedish citizen you cannot get a Swedish passport. Becoming a citizen is handled by the Swedish Migration Agency: the general rule is at least eight years of residence in Sweden, and it is two years for Nordic citizens.
