Can you take snus to the UK?

What UK law and the official travel allowances say about snus.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

UK law prohibits producing or supplying tobacco for oral use, including sachets, and the government's list of traveller allowances does not mention snus. The allowance is one of 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco, so carrying snus for personal use is not clearly covered. This topic is for adults aged 18 and over.

Why

  1. Regulation 17 of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 says "No person may produce or supply tobacco for oral use", according to legislation.gov.uk.
  2. The UK government's page on bringing goods into Great Britain lists 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of tobacco or 200 heated-tobacco sticks and does not mention snus.
  3. Section 8 of the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026, headed "Ban on sales of snus etc", is listed on legislation.gov.uk as in force from 29 October 2026 and covers selling.

Details

The 2016 regulations define tobacco for oral use as a product intended for oral use, other than one meant to be inhaled or chewed, in powder or particulate form, including in a sachet. Neither the allowance page nor section 8 of the 2026 Act says anything about carrying snus for personal use, so the position can only be confirmed with HMRC or Border Force.

Tip

Ask HMRC or Border Force through GOV.UK before you travel, and do not rely on forum answers about personal limits.

What may differ

The allowance page checked covers arrivals in Great Britain, and GOV.UK has a separate page for Northern Ireland.
