What should you declare to customs at Arlanda?
What belongs in the red lane, when the green or blue lane is right, and what happens if you choose wrongly.
Short answer
You must declare goods above the duty-free allowances, cash of EUR 10,000 or more, dogs and cats, and firearms with silencers and ammunition by choosing the red lane. With nothing to declare, choose the green lane, or the blue lane if you come directly from an EU country. Choosing green or blue with excess goods counts as smuggling.
Why
- According to Swedish Customs, you select the red channel marked 'Goods to declare' at the border, and always do so if you are unsure.
- Swedish Customs says cash worth EUR 10,000 or more, dogs and cats, and firearms, silencers and ammunition must be notified.
- Swedish Customs says that choosing the green or blue channel while carrying goods in excess of the allowances constitutes smuggling.
Details
Goods over the allowance include alcohol and tobacco above the duty-free amounts and other goods worth more than SEK 5,000 when you travel by plane. In some cases, for example with a pet or cash, you can register with Swedish Customs online before you travel and then use the green lane, but you must show the registration number if you are checked. Swedish Customs describes the lanes for Swedish border crossings in general and does not single out Arlanda, so follow the signs in the arrivals hall.
Tip
If you are unsure, choose the red lane. Swedish Customs says you then do not risk being suspected of smuggling, and you can pay the charges, take the goods back out or hand them over.
What may differ
The blue lane, marked with an EU symbol, is for travellers coming directly from an EU country with nothing to declare. What counts as over the allowance also depends on where you come from: guideline amounts apply for alcohol from the EU, fixed duty-free amounts from outside it.
