Which group suits you
This page is useful if you arrive by train or bus and want a short walk to your hotel, if you want to stay by the water opposite Gamla stan, the Old Town, or if you would rather stay in a district outside the very centre.
| If you need | What to look at | Which group fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| A short walk from the train, the commuter train or the bus | An address on Vasagatan or at Hötorget | In the centre and by the water | Which station exit is closest to the hotel entrance |
| Sights and water on your doorstep | An address on the quays or on Skeppsholmen | In the centre and by the water | The way from the nearest stop to the entrance if you have luggage |
| A place to stay outside the very centre | The district in the address on the card | The districts around the centre | The travel time by public transport to what you plan to do |
| A room with a window or a view | The description of the room category on the hotel's website | Any group | That the window and the view are stated for the exact category you book |
| An accessible room | The hotel's accessibility page: door widths, thresholds and bathroom | Any group | Whether the room can only be booked directly with the hotel |
How to choose an area: the centre, the water or a district
- Arriving by train or bus: choose the centre, where the hotels are on Vasagatan and at Hötorget.
- Want to stay opposite Gamla stan: look at the hotels on the quays and on Skeppsholmen.
- The districts around the centre: addresses in Vasastan, Östermalm and Södermalm.
- This page is a selection: the catalogue holds more than two hundred cards in the same category.
The Central Station is on Vasagatan, and the commuter train station Stockholm City has its main entrances on Klarabergsgatan and Vasagatan, according to Jernhusen, which owns the station buildings. A hotel on Vasagatan or at Hötorget therefore suits you when you arrive late, travel on early or have heavy luggage. Compare the hotel entrance with the exit you plan to take: the address tells you more than a promise of a central location.
The hotels by the water are on Blasieholmen and Skeppsholmen, opposite the Royal Palace and Gamla stan. You have the palace and the old city core across the water, but the way to trains and the metro is longer than from the centre.
In the districts around the centre you stay among residential buildings, shops and restaurants in Vasastan, Östermalm or Södermalm, and take public transport or walk into the centre. More hotels, including those not listed here, are in the catalogue category Hotels & Resorts, and facts about the city are on the city page. Guides on other topics are gathered under Rating of popular places.
What to check before you book
- Check-in: from 14:00, 15:00 or 16:00 depending on the hotel. Check-out: 12:00.
- Room category: window, view and bed type are stated in the description of each category.
- Cancellation: the terms belong to the rate you choose, not to the hotel.
- Payment: several hotels are cash-free.
- Pets and parking: the rules differ from hotel to hotel.
Check-in and check-out times differ between hotels. At the hotels whose times we read on their own websites in October 2026, check-in starts at 14:00, 15:00 or 16:00, and check-out is at 12:00. If you arrive earlier, you can ask whether the hotel stores luggage until the room is ready.
Rooms without windows exist in hotels in the very centre, where they are sold as separate categories. A hotel on a square or by the water therefore does not mean that every room looks out on it. Read the description of the category you are booking, and compare the same category when you compare prices.
Cancellation terms follow the rate. In the terms we have read (October 2026) there are two common rate types: a flexible rate that can be cancelled until 18:00 on the day before arrival, and a rate that is not refunded. Which one applies to you is stated in the booking confirmation.
Several hotels are cash-free and take debit and credit cards, sometimes also the Swedish payment app Swish. Pets are welcome in some hotels, sometimes only small dogs, while others do not accept animals at all. Parking in the hotel garage costs extra, and the price is on the hotel's website.
Accessibility: the station, the entrance and the room
- All entrances to the Central Station are accessible, according to Jernhusen.
- Accessible rooms often belong to one particular room category.
- Some hotels take bookings for accessible rooms only by phone or email.
- Door and bathroom measurements are on the hotel's accessibility page.
The way from the train to the room has three parts: the station, the hotel entrance and the room itself. Jernhusen writes that all entrances to the Central Station are accessible, and that travellers with a disability can get assistance to and from the train if it is ordered from the train company at least 24 hours before the journey. That applies to the station: what the entrance and the room are like is described by each hotel itself.
Accessible rooms are few and often belong to one particular category. One of the hotels in the inner city states, for example, that the door to the room is 85 centimetres wide and the bathroom door 90 centimetres, and asks guests to book by phone or email instead of online (the hotel's website, October 2026). Describe what you need when you book, for example the width of your wheelchair, so that the hotel can tell you whether the room is suitable.
Questions and answers
It depends on the trip: the centre suits you when you arrive by train or bus and want a short walk to the station, the hotels by the water are opposite Gamla stan, and the districts around the centre suit those who would rather stay outside the very centre with public transport into town.

The hotels on this page are chosen by the SverigesForetagsGuide editorial team. Payment affects neither the selection nor the order. The order within the groups is free and says nothing about quality.
