How to choose a location: the station, the water or Södermalm
- Late arrival or early departure: choose the blocks north of the Central Station, with addresses on Torsgatan and Upplandsgatan.
- Gamla stan and the water: stay in the alleys, on Skeppsholmen or in a cabin on a boat at the quay.
- Södermalm and Långholmen: near the metro at Slussen and Skanstull, or on the island with bathing next door.
- This page is a selection: the catalogue category holds about forty cards, student housing among them.
The hostels north of the Central Station suit you when your train or bus arrives late or leaves early. Two of them have addresses on Torsgatan and Upplandsgatan, in the blocks north of the station, and the third is further north, on Surbrunnsgatan next to Vasastan. This group has both a reception staffed around the clock and houses where the reception closes in the evening, so compare your arrival time with the reception hours before you decide.
In Gamla stan you stay in an older house in the alleys, where the way to the room goes by steps and a small lift. On Skeppsholmen the hostel is right by the water, with a view of Gamla stan and the Royal Palace. At Söder Mälarstrand the hostel is a boat at the quay, and there you stay in a cabin instead of a room.
On Södermalm the hostels are near the metro at Slussen, Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull. On Långholmen, the island next to Södermalm, you stay in the old Kronhäktet prison from 1840, with bathing and nature next door. More hostels, including those not listed here, are in the catalogue category Hostels, and facts about the city are on the city page. Guides to hotels and other places to stay are gathered under Hotels and accommodation.
Dorm or private room: what is included and what you bring
- Room type: a bed in a dorm, a private room with a shared bathroom, or a private room with shower and toilet.
- Dorms come in several sizes, and several hostels have dorms for women only.
- Bed linen and towel: included, rented on site or brought from home, depending on the hostel and the room type.
- Sleeping bags are not allowed in several of the hostels.
- Breakfast: included in the price, bought as an extra or cooked in the guest kitchen.
The word hostel does not tell you what you are buying: the same house sells both a bed in a dorm and a private room. In the hostels whose room types we read on their own websites in October 2026, the dorms have from four to sixteen beds, several have dorms for women only, and the private rooms are singles, doubles and family rooms, in one place also apartments with a kitchen for six to eight guests. On the boat you stay in a cabin for one to three people, and in the old prison the cells are now rooms with two or four beds.
Bed linen and towels are what most often surprises guests. In one of the hostels they are included in the private rooms but not in the dorms, in others you rent them on site for a fee, and several houses do not allow sleeping bags. Read what is said about bed linen for the exact room type you book, and you will know whether to pack sheets.
Breakfast works in three ways. One hostel on Södermalm includes breakfast in all room prices, in others it costs extra, and in a couple of places no breakfast is served at all. Most of the hostels have a guest kitchen for self-catering, but a kitchen does not mean that breakfast is included.
Before you arrive: reception, payment and house rules
- Check-in: from 14:00 or 15:00. Check-out: by 10:00 or 11:00.
- Reception: around the clock in some hostels, closed in the evening in others.
- Late arrival: announce it in advance and you will be told how to get in.
- Payment: cards are the rule, and one hostel takes no cash at all.
- Cancellation: the limit is often two days before arrival.
At the hostels whose times we read on their own websites in October 2026, check-in starts at 14:00 or 15:00, and the room must be left by 10:00 or 11:00. If you arrive earlier, several places let you leave your luggage and use the common areas until the room is ready.
The reception is the big difference from a hotel. Two of the hostels on this page state that the reception is open around the clock, while others close at 18:00 or 20:00. After closing you get in with instructions that are sent on the day you arrive, but only if you have announced a late arrival in advance. One of the hostels wants to be told at least two days ahead if you check in after 22:00.
Cards are the rule when you pay. One of the hostels, according to its website, takes no cash, only cards and Apple Pay, and another states that it takes only Visa and Mastercard. In the cancellation terms we have read (October 2026), a flexible rate can be cancelled free of charge until two days before arrival. After that the first night is charged, and a non-refundable rate is paid in full.
House rules differ from hostel to hostel. Quiet after 23:00 and a ban on pets occur, while one of the hostels by the water welcomes pets. In one hostel alcohol is not allowed in the house, in others there is a bar or a restaurant.
Questions and answers
No, the hostels sell both beds in dorms and private rooms. A private room can have a shared bathroom in the corridor or its own shower and toilet, and this is stated in the description of the room type.
Not always: in some hostels they are included only in private rooms, and in others you rent them on site or bring your own sheets. Sleeping bags are often not allowed.
It depends on the hostel: one of them includes breakfast in all room prices, in others it costs extra, and some serve no breakfast but have a guest kitchen where you cook for yourself.
Yes, but where the reception closes in the evening you must announce a late arrival in advance, and you then get instructions for getting in. Hostels with a reception open around the clock receive you whenever you come.
Yes, several are in the blocks north of the Central Station, in Gamla stan and on Skeppsholmen. On Södermalm and Långholmen you stay further from the station but near the metro or a bathing spot.
Not everywhere: one of the hostels takes no cash at all, and another takes only Visa and Mastercard. Bring a payment card.
No. Two of the hostels here belong to STF, the Swedish Tourist Association, and members stay there at a discounted price when they book through the association's own channels.

The hostels on this page are chosen by the SverigesForetagsGuide editorial team. Payment affects neither the selection nor the order. The order within the groups is free and says nothing about quality.
