Italian restaurants in Gothenburg: 9 places from inside the moat to Majorna and Olskroken

This page brings together Italian restaurants in Gothenburg: inside the moat, around Avenyn and in Vasastaden, and on Långgatorna, in Majorna and in Olskroken. It shows what sets a trattoria with lunch apart from a wine bar or a ravioleria with a set menu: every restaurant has an address and a short description, and the link to the restaurant's website is on the card.

Cards checked on 7 October 2026. Editor: Alex. Found a mistake? Leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

How to choose: trattoria, wine bar or ravioleria

  • Trattoria: pasta, risotto and meat dishes à la carte, often with lunch on weekdays.
  • Enoteca: a wine bar where the food is chosen to go with the wine, at one place with about 200 wines on the shelves.
  • Ravioleria: filled pasta as the main thing and a menu that the whole table orders.
  • Location: inside the moat and around Avenyn the restaurants are close together, further out they are neighbourhood places.

The name tells you part of what you get. The places that call themselves a trattoria as a rule serve pasta, risotto and meat dishes à la carte, and several of them serve lunch on weekdays. One of them, on Avenyn, describes itself as the city's oldest Italian restaurant and has been there since the early 1970s. On Kungsgatan there is a family-owned restaurant that has been open since 1997, with fresh pasta with truffle and meat dishes on the menu.

An enoteca is essentially a wine bar. The one on Teatergatan has about 200 wines on the shelves and takes table bookings from parties that intend to eat at least three courses, while guests who only want a glass are directed to the drop-in seats. The wine bar in Majorna has a wide range of Italian wines, a menu that changes from day to day and wine tastings in season.

In Olskroken there is a ravioleria and wine bar where handmade filled pasta is the main thing. Inside the moat there is also a restaurant that mixes Italian with New York: Neapolitan pizza and dishes to share.

The page is a selection: more restaurants are in the Restaurants category of the directory, and facts about the city are on the city page. Pages on other topics are collected under Restaurants and cafés.

Booking and drop-in: the rules differ from place to place

  • Most have booking on their website, one trattoria takes bookings by phone and email only.
  • Small places cap the size of a party: eight guests at one, ten at another.
  • Drop-in seats are at the bar or by the window at a couple of places.
  • Larger parties: group menus from ten people or a private dining room.

Most of the restaurants on this page have table booking on their website, through various booking systems (October 2026). The exception is the trattoria on Aschebergsgatan, which takes bookings by phone and email and asks you to give a phone number and any allergies.

The small places set limits. The trattoria on Aschebergsgatan does not accept parties of more than eight and wants to know at least 24 hours ahead if there will be fewer of you. The ravioleria in Olskroken does not take bookings for more than ten, but keeps about ten seats at the bar and by the window for guests without a booking. At the wine bar on Teatergatan a table booking is for guests who eat at least three courses.

If there are many of you, the restaurants on Kungsgatan have ways to handle it: one has special menus for parties of ten or more, another has a private dining room for closed parties. The wine bar in Majorna also arranges dinners for larger parties and companies.

The menu: dishes of the day, set menu or à la carte

  • The menu may change every day and is then not always online.
  • Set menus often apply to the whole table and to a minimum number of guests.
  • Antipasti are starters, primi pasta and risotto, secondi meat and fish.
  • Gluten-free pasta and vegetarian options are available at some places, not at all of them.

Two of the restaurants change their menu from day to day. One, on Aschebergsgatan, cooks food from northern Italy, from Piedmont, Lombardy and the Triveneto, and neither publishes the menu nor sends it out in advance. The other, in Majorna, has à la carte every evening and also menus of three or five courses. So if you want a particular dish, you have to ask on the day.

Set menus have rules of their own. On Kungsgatan there are set menus ordered by at least two people, and in Olskroken a five-course menu is served that the whole party orders, with a vegetarian option (the restaurants' websites, October 2026). At most of the others you choose freely from the menu.

An Italian menu follows the order of the meal: antipasti are starters, primi piatti pasta and risotto, secondi piatti meat and fish, and contorni side dishes ordered separately. One restaurant inside the moat states that it has gluten-free pasta. We have found no such information for the others, so mention allergies when you book.

Questions and answers

Can you eat Italian on a Sunday in Gothenburg?

Yes. According to the restaurants' websites in October 2026 the restaurant on Avenyn is open every day, and two restaurants inside the moat, the trattoria on Aschebergsgatan and the wine bar in Majorna are also open on Sundays. The others are closed on Sundays.

Where can you have an Italian lunch?

On weekdays four of the restaurants serve lunch according to their websites: on Kungsgatan, on Avenyn, on Tredje Långgatan and in Majorna. Lunch starts at 11 am or 11.30 am.

Do you have to book a table?

In the evening it is wise, especially at the small places. Most have booking on their website, and a couple keep drop-in seats for guests who come without a booking.

What is the difference between a trattoria and an enoteca?

A trattoria is a restaurant with simpler, traditional food, while an enoteca is a wine bar where the wine comes first and the food is chosen to go with it. This page has both, and a ravioleria with filled pasta as well.

Do the restaurants serve pizza?

One does, but pizza is not the main thing here: a restaurant on Magasinsgatan has Neapolitan pizza alongside dishes to share. Most of the others keep to pasta, risotto, meat and fish.

Can we come as a larger party?

It depends on the place. Two of the smaller restaurants do not take parties above eight and ten people respectively, while one restaurant on Kungsgatan has group menus from ten people and another has a private dining room.

Can you take the food away?

Lunch is available as take away at one restaurant on Kungsgatan. We have found no information about take away from the evening menu on the restaurants' websites.
