Restaurants in Sundsvall: 12 places around Stora torget, on Esplanaden and with a view of the town
Restaurants in Sundsvall stand close together in Stenstaden, the stone-built centre: around the square Stora torget, in the blocks to the east towards Sjögatan and along Esplanaden. Three places also have the town as their view, from the top of a hotel north of the square, from the quay Norra Kajen and from the hill Södra Berget. Here you can see which kitchens serve lunch, which open only in the afternoon and which days of the week are thin: the address is in each card, and the map below the cards shows where the places are.
Around Stora torget: tasting menu, tapas and Italian
East of the square: Sjögatan, Kyrkogatan and Trädgårdsgatan
Esplanaden and westwards: lunch, pizza and a French bistro
With a view: the top of the hotel, Norra Kajen and Södra Berget

Four locations: the square, the blocks to the east, Esplanaden and the heights
- Stora torget: three kitchens within about 170 metres, on Torggatan, on the square itself and at Kyrkogatan 17.
- To the east: Sjögatan 5, Kyrkogatan 8 and Trädgårdsgatan 5, around 300 metres from the square.
- Esplanaden: number 14 and number 18 stand about a hundred metres apart.
- Södra Berget: about three kilometres from the centre, ten minutes by car according to the hotel there.
Stenstaden can be crossed on foot in a few minutes. From Stora torget it is at most just under 400 metres as the crow flies to the restaurants in the first three groups, measured on the cards' map points. Closest to the square are a restaurant with a tasting menu on Torggatan, a kitchen with dishes to share on the square itself and an Italian restaurant at Kyrkogatan 17.
Three restaurants are chosen for the sake of the view. The first is at the top of the hotel on Skepparegatan, around 300 metres north of the square, and according to its website has a terrace with a wide view of the whole town. The second is a neighbourhood bistro on Norra Kajen, at the mouth of the river Selångersån and just over half a kilometre from the square, which describes itself as having the water for a neighbour and a view of the town. The third is on the hill Södra Stadsberget, where the hotel speaks of a view for miles over the town, the sea, hills and valleys.
The catalogue has more addresses than the twelve here: see the sections Restaurants and Asian restaurants and sushi bars, or start on the page about Sundsvall. Restaurants in other towns are gathered in the section Restaurants and cafés.
The week: lunch on weekdays, thin on Sundays and Mondays
- Lunch Monday to Friday: from 10.45 am at Esplanaden 14, from 11 am on Sjögatan and at Kyrkogatan 24.
- From the afternoon: 4 pm at Kyrkogatan 8 and Esplanaden 18, 5 pm on Trädgårdsgatan, on Skepparegatan and on Södra Berget.
- Sunday and Monday: two kitchens give Sunday hours, and four are closed on Mondays.
Lunch every weekday is served at three places (the restaurants' own websites, 7 October 2026). The music restaurant at Esplanaden 14 starts as early as 10.45 am and has a vegetarian option every day. In the hotel restaurant on Sjögatan, where lunch runs between 11 am and 2 pm, a salad buffet, bread, coffee and cake are included. The French bistro at Kyrkogatan 24 keeps the same hours and adds a Saturday lunch that lasts until 3.30 pm.
Two kitchens serve lunch only on certain days: the bistro on Norra Kajen from Tuesday to Saturday and the Italian restaurant at Esplanaden 18 on Fridays only. The kitchen on Stora torget opens its doors at 11 am on weekdays and an hour later on Saturdays.
The dinner places get going in the afternoon. The Italian restaurant at Kyrkogatan 8 receives guests from 4 pm, on Saturdays as early as 2 pm, and the restaurant on Trädgårdsgatan from 5 pm. The same hour applies at the top of the hotel and on Södra Berget; in the hotel the kitchen closes at 9.30 pm Monday to Thursday and half an hour later on Friday and Saturday.
Sunday and Monday take some planning. Only the two restaurants on Esplanaden give Sunday hours. On Mondays the lights are out at the Italian restaurants at Kyrkogatan 8 and Esplanaden 18, at the restaurant on Trädgårdsgatan and at the bistro on the quay. The restaurant at Kyrkogatan 17 and the kitchen on Torggatan show no weekly hours on their pages, and the hours in the catalogue cards are not always right: trust the restaurant's own website.
Format and booking: tasting menu, dishes to share and parties
- Tasting menu on Torggatan: a dinner takes about two and a half to three hours.
- Parties: a form from 17 guests at Kyrkogatan 17, a pre-ordered menu from 13 guests on Södra Berget.
- Children: a children's menu on Södra Berget, no children's menu on Torggatan.
The kitchen on Torggatan differs from everything else on the page. It serves a tasting menu that follows the season, in a Nordic kitchen with flavours and techniques from Japan and Spain, and a dinner takes about two and a half to three hours according to the restaurant. The restaurant cannot cater for a vegan diet, milk protein allergy or egg allergy, has no children's menu and does not admit prams.
Italian food is found at three addresses. The restaurant at Kyrkogatan 17 belongs to a chain with restaurants in some ten other Swedish towns, bakes Neapolitan pizza, makes fresh pasta every day and does not take cash. At Esplanaden 18 the pizza is at the centre, and every pizza can be had gluten-free. The restaurant at Kyrkogatan 8 describes its cooking as food from the Italian villages, plain, simple and full of flavour.
On Stora torget the party shares the dishes: the kitchen there has a South American direction and devotes October to December 2026 to Spanish food with tapas. The music restaurant on Esplanaden has quiz, karaoke, jazz, blues and stand-up evenings alongside the food. The restaurant on Trädgårdsgatan cooks classic dishes such as langoustine soup, pike-perch and pepper steak, and the French bistro has snails and veal stew on the menu.
At most places a table is booked online, through a booking service the restaurant links to; the bistro on the quay takes bookings by phone or e-mail. Larger parties have rules of their own. The chain restaurant at Kyrkogatan 17 has a form for 17 guests or more, and on Södra Berget parties of 13 to 30 people choose between two dishes per course and pre-order five days ahead. The hotel restaurant on Sjögatan has a marble table where a group cooks the evening's menu together with the chef.
