Taqueria, fusion or dishes to share: how the kitchens describe themselves
- Taqueria: two places in City, one of them modelled on Mexico City.
- Dishes to share: stated by two restaurants, on Beridarebanan and on Sankt Eriksgatan.
- Fusion: a restaurant in Vasastan calls itself a Mexican fusion restaurant.
- Mexican and South American: on Skånegatan by Nytorget.
There are two taquerias in City. The one by Klarabergsviadukten describes itself as a Mexican taqueria that gives the city a taste of Mexico City, with tacos, pastor and birria, and is open in the evenings Tuesday to Saturday (the restaurant's website, read on 7 October 2026). The one by Barnhusgatan belongs to a chain that opened in the summer of 2009 and calls itself Northern Europe's first true taqueria: Mexican street food with tacos and quesadillas, and a lunch of the day Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3 pm.
Two kitchens in the same part of town are open from late morning. On Beridarebanan the dishes are, the restaurant says, made to be shared, with tacos, grilled skewers and ceviche, and the doors open at 11 am on weekdays and at noon at the weekend. On Luntmakargatan the kitchen promises one hundred per cent authentic Mexican food, with a ceviche inspired by the Mazatlán region, and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am.
In Vasastan and on Södermalm there are four evening restaurants. The one on Norrtullsgatan calls itself a Mexican fusion restaurant with a Latin American kitchen, while the one on Sankt Eriksgatan has its guests share the dishes, taking the taquerias of the Mexican neighbourhoods as its inspiration. On Skånegatan by Nytorget both Mexican and South American food is on the menu, and on Verkstadsgatan by Hornstull there is a restaurant that welcomes pets.
More Mexican kitchens, including burrito places and others that did not fit here, are in the directory category Restaurants. There is more about the city on the Stockholm page, and other cuisines have their own guides under Restaurants and cafés.
The tortilla and the words on the menu: corn, pastor and birria
- House-made tortillas: three kitchens in City and Norrmalm say how they make them.
- Corn or wheat: the taqueria by Barnhusgatan has both kinds.
- Pastor: marinated pork with pineapple.
- Birria: slow-cooked meat, on the menu in City and in Vasastan.
- Vegan and gluten-free: promised explicitly by the kitchen on Luntmakargatan.
The tortilla is what separates the kitchens most. The taqueria by Klarabergsviadukten writes that it has its own corn flour and handmade tortillas. The kitchen on Luntmakargatan says it makes everything from scratch every day, the handmade corn tortillas included. The chain behind the taqueria by Barnhusgatan bakes its tortillas from scratch every day in its own bakery in Sollentuna, from both corn and wheat (the websites, 7 October 2026).
The menus use Spanish words that are seldom explained. At the taqueria by Barnhusgatan pastor stands for marinated pork with pineapple, bistec for grilled beef, suadero for slow-cooked chuck steak and carnitas for slow-cooked pork with pico de gallo. There is also a taco with portobello and vegetarian quesadillas, and the guacamole comes with totopos, that is, tortilla chips.
Birria is on the menu both by Klarabergsviadukten and on Sankt Eriksgatan, and ceviche is served on Luntmakargatan and on Beridarebanan. Anyone who eats vegan or gluten-free gets the clearest answer on Luntmakargatan, where the restaurant writes that both alternatives are available.
Hours, tables and food to take away
- Weekday lunch: three kitchens in City and Norrmalm, from 11 am.
- Weekend: two evening restaurants open as early as noon, and a third serves brunch.
- Closed: Sunday at three, Monday at two.
- Larger parties: email from eight guests at one place, set menus from fifteen at another.
- Takeaway: online ordering at six of the eight.
On weekdays it is the kitchens in City and Norrmalm that are open in the middle of the day. In Vasastan and on Södermalm the restaurants open at 4 pm, 4.30 pm or 5 pm Monday to Friday. At the weekend it is the other way round: on Sankt Eriksgatan and Skånegatan the kitchen opens at noon on both Saturday and Sunday, and on Verkstadsgatan brunch is served from noon to 3 pm on those days, before dinner takes over.
Three of the restaurants are closed on Sundays: the taqueria by Klarabergsviadukten, the kitchen on Luntmakargatan and the fusion restaurant on Norrtullsgatan. The first two are closed on Mondays as well. Three stay open until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays: on Beridarebanan, Norrtullsgatan and Skånegatan.
Six of the eight have a booking link on their website, and the restaurant on Verkstadsgatan writes that dropping in is just as welcome. For larger parties the limits differ: on Norrtullsgatan you email from eight guests, and by Klarabergsviadukten there are set menus for parties of more than fifteen. On Beridarebanan there is a separate area for up to 20 people, and there are private rooms on Norrtullsgatan and on Skånegatan too, where the room has a stage.
Takeaway is ordered online at six of the eight, and the taqueria by Barnhusgatan offers both pickup and delivery.
Questions and answers
A taqueria is a place that serves tacos first and foremost, in a simpler form than a restaurant with a full menu. In this guide two places in City call themselves that, and one of them belongs to a chain that opened in the city in the summer of 2009.
Three of the kitchens in City and Norrmalm say so: by Klarabergsviadukten with their own corn flour and handmade tortillas, on Luntmakargatan with handmade corn tortillas every day, and by Barnhusgatan with tortillas from the chain's own bakery.
In City and Norrmalm: on Beridarebanan the kitchen opens at 11 am every weekday, on Luntmakargatan at 11 am Tuesday to Friday, and the taqueria by Barnhusgatan has a lunch of the day Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. At the weekend two evening restaurants also open at noon, on Sankt Eriksgatan and Skånegatan.
Pastor is marinated pork served with pineapple, while birria is slow-cooked meat. Both are on the menu at the taqueria by Klarabergsviadukten.
Yes, most clearly on Luntmakargatan, where the restaurant writes that both vegan and gluten-free alternatives are available. The taqueria by Barnhusgatan has a taco with portobello, vegetarian quesadillas and tortillas of both corn and wheat: say what you need when you order.
Four of the eight give Sunday hours: on Beridarebanan from noon to 10 pm, on Sankt Eriksgatan from noon to 10.30 pm, on Skånegatan from noon to 10 pm and on Verkstadsgatan with brunch from noon and dinner until 9 pm (the websites, 7 October 2026). Three are closed, and the taqueria by Barnhusgatan gives no hours on the pages we read.

How we make the guide
The restaurants on this page are chosen by the editors of SverigesForetagsGuide. Payment affects neither the selection nor the order. The order within the groups is free and says nothing about quality.
