Brasserie, bistro or neighbourhood restaurant: three ways to eat French
- Brasserie: a large dining room, open straight through from lunch to late evening.
- Bistro: a smaller room, a shorter menu and mostly evening hours.
- Neighbourhood restaurant with a French kitchen: a dish of the day, regulars and earlier evenings.
- Location: four of the ten are on Östermalm, three in and around Gamla stan.
Three of the restaurants are brasseries or take the brasserie as their model, and they keep hours to match. The one by Odengatan in Vasastan opens at 11.30 am on weekdays and at noon at the weekend and closes between 11 pm and midnight, every day of the week (the restaurant's website, read on 7 October 2026). The brasserie by Katarinavägen, above Slussen, opens at 11.30 am Monday to Friday and at noon on Saturdays, and gives no closing time, only the word late. By Skeppsbron there is a brasserie with seafood and a charcoal grill alongside the French kitchen.
The bistros are smaller and open later. On Artillerigatan on Östermalm the kitchen opens at 5 pm every day except Friday, when it opens at noon. On Hantverkargatan on Kungsholmen dinner is served Tuesday to Saturday from 5.30 pm, and on Baggensgatan in Gamla stan there is a bistro with lunch Tuesday to Friday from noon to 3 pm. On Kammakargatan on Norrmalm the doors open at 11.30 am Monday to Friday and at 5 pm on Saturdays.
Two neighbourhood restaurants on Östermalm cook French in their own way. The one on Storgatan, just over a hundred metres from Östermalmstorg, calls itself a genuine neighbourhood restaurant with a French way of cooking and seats 38 guests. The one on Narvavägen has been there since November 1954 and is now run by the second generation of the same family. Its kitchen is open from 10.45 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and from 1 pm to 8 pm on Sundays, and it is closed on Saturdays.
Two of the brasseries are listed in the directory under Bars and lounges, the others under Restaurants, where you will also find French kitchens that did not fit here. The city's page in the directory is Stockholm, and more guides by cuisine are under Restaurants and cafés.
The menu: the classics, the dish of the day and a menu for the whole table
- Classics that keep returning: snails in garlic butter, moules frites, boeuf bourguignon and crème brûlée.
- Weekday lunch: eight of the ten, and it ends at 2 pm or 3 pm depending on the place.
- Brunch: Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3.30 pm at the brasserie by Odengatan.
- Menu of the day: posted on the website by 5 pm at a kitchen on Kungsholmen.
The menus rest on a handful of classics, and the restaurants like to name them themselves. The bistro on Artillerigatan highlights snails in garlic butter, steak au poivre, crème brûlée and tarte tatin. The neighbourhood restaurant on Storgatan keeps snails, chèvre chaud and boeuf bourguignon as fixed dishes beside the seasonal ones, and on Narvavägen steak minute with béarnaise and brochette de boeuf are on the à la carte.
Lunch keeps its own hours. On Storgatan it is served from 11.30 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday, on Ingmar Bergmans gata from 11 am to 3 pm, and on Baggensgatan from noon to 3 pm Tuesday to Friday. On Narvavägen there is a dish of the day, and the lunch menu there alternates new dishes with Swedish home cooking. The brasserie by Skeppsbron is open for lunch only on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 11.30 am to 3 pm.
Two kitchens depart from the fixed menu. On Hantverkargatan the menu of the day is posted on the website by 5 pm the same day. In the private room by Odengatan a seasonal five-course menu is served to the whole table, while larger parties in the dining room have a three-course menu.
Tables, parties, dogs and prams: the small print
- Booking: online at most of them, by phone at the neighbourhood restaurant on Narvavägen.
- More than six: phone or email at the neighbourhood restaurant on Storgatan.
- From twelve guests: a pre-ordered group menu by Katarinavägen.
- Private room: 10 seats by Odengatan, about 16 on Storgatan and up to 25 on Artillerigatan.
- Dogs: welcome in the bar area of one brasserie, not at all at another.
Most of the restaurants have a booking link on their website (the websites, 7 October 2026). On Narvavägen you reserve by telephone, and on Storgatan parties of more than six book by phone or email.
Private rooms exist at four places. By Odengatan up to 10 people can sit, on Storgatan about 16 in the inner part of the room, and on Artillerigatan the room holds up to 25 guests. On Ingmar Bergmans gata there is a room shared with a sister restaurant and booked on request. By Katarinavägen a pre-ordered group menu applies from twelve guests.
The brasserie by Katarinavägen is cash-free and takes at most two cards from a party of more than seven. For fire-safety reasons the same brasserie takes at most one or two prams at a time and asks you to say so when booking, and dogs are not admitted there. By Odengatan dogs are welcome in the bar area and on the outdoor terrace, where tables cannot be booked, but not in the dining room. On Storgatan you are welcome to bring your dog to the outdoor seating.
Anyone who wants a long Friday evening can choose between four restaurants that are open until 1 am: on Kammakargatan, on Ingmar Bergmans gata, on Artillerigatan and by Skeppsbron.
Questions and answers
A brasserie is larger and keeps long hours, often from lunch to late evening without a break, while a bistro is a smaller room with a shorter menu. In this guide the hours show it: the brasseries open at 11.30 am on weekdays, while two of the bistros do not open until 5 pm or 5.30 pm.
Six of the ten in the guide: the brasserie by Odengatan from noon to 11 pm, three restaurants on Östermalm that open at 1 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm, a bistro in Gamla stan from 4 pm to 10 pm and the brasserie by Skeppsbron from 11.30 am to 5 pm (the websites, 7 October 2026). The other four are closed or give no Sunday hours.
The brasserie by Odengatan serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3.30 pm, with moules frites among the dishes. The brasseries by Skeppsbron and Katarinavägen also have a brunch menu, but the days are not given on their front pages: ask when you book.
Classics that the restaurants themselves name are snails in garlic butter, moules frites, steak au poivre, boeuf bourguignon and chèvre chaud, and for dessert crème brûlée and tarte tatin.
For dinner it is wise, and most of them take bookings on their website. Without a booking you can sit in the bar area by Odengatan, where tables are not booked.
Yes, at four of the restaurants, with 10 to 25 seats in the three that state the size. By Odengatan a five-course menu applies to the whole table.

How we make the guide
The restaurants on this page are chosen by the editors of SverigesForetagsGuide. Payment affects neither the selection nor the order. The order within the groups is free and says nothing about quality.
