How to choose: area, time of day and company
- Around Sveavägen: lunch at two of the restaurants, and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.
- Gamla stan: kitchens that are open every day, from lunch until late in the evening.
- Södermalm: open in the evening on weekdays, and for lunch at the weekend at one of the restaurants.
- This page is a selection: the catalogue holds many more Italian kitchens among over a thousand restaurant cards.
The restaurants around Sveavägen are in the centre and in Vasastan: by Tunnelgatan, on Sveavägen and on Tulegatan. One of them is housed in a cinema hall from the 1920s, with a menu meant to be shared at the table. According to the restaurants' own websites (read on 7 October 2026), two of them have a lunch menu, and two are open from Tuesday to Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday.
In Gamla stan, the Old Town, the restaurants are on Stora Nygatan and Västerlånggatan. Two of them are, according to their websites, open every day of the week, from 11:00 or 11:30 on weekdays and until 22:00 or later, so here you can have both an early lunch and a late dinner. All three have a chambre séparée, a private dining room, for closed parties.
On Södermalm the restaurants are on Högbergsgatan, on Swedenborgsgatan and by Hornstulls strand. Here weekdays belong to the evening: one of the restaurants opens at 17:00 from Monday to Friday and already at 12:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Another has been on the same street corner for over thirty years and has a bar area where you can sit down without a booking. More restaurants, including those not listed here, are in the catalogue category Restaurants, and facts about the city are on the city page. Guides to other cuisines are gathered under Restaurants and cafés.
Lunch, dinner and booking a table: how it works
- Lunch and dinner often have different menus, and lunch is served for only a couple of hours in the middle of the day.
- Closed days: Sunday and Monday are the most common.
- Tables are booked on the restaurant's own website, and the phone number is on the card.
- The bar and the dining room can have different opening hours.
- Drop-in: some restaurants keep the bar area open for guests without a booking.
Lunch is often a chapter of its own: a separate menu, only on weekdays and only for a couple of hours in the middle of the day. One of the restaurants in Vasastan, for example, serves lunch from Tuesday to Friday between 11:30 and 14:00 and then opens again at 17:00 (the restaurant's website, 7 October 2026). If you want a particular dish from the evening menu, you therefore have to come in the evening.
All the restaurants on this page take table bookings on their own websites, usually through a button labelled Boka bord, which means book a table, and several also take bookings by phone. The bar and the dining room can keep different hours: at one of the restaurants the bar opens half an hour to an hour before the kitchen. The bar's opening hours therefore do not tell you when you can order food.
Sunday and Monday are the days when most kitchens are closed. Two of the restaurants around Sveavägen are open from Tuesday to Saturday, while two of the restaurants in Gamla stan and one on Södermalm are open every day. Before Christmas a couple of the restaurants also offer julbord, the Swedish Christmas buffet.
Larger parties, food to take away and dogs
- Larger parties: ask for a chambre séparée or private dinners.
- The size differs: from 8 to 12 seats in one room to 60 in another.
- Take away is offered by two of the restaurants.
- Dogs: welcome in the bar area at one of the restaurants on Södermalm.
Five of the restaurants on this page describe private rooms or private dinners for closed parties on their websites (7 October 2026). A chambre séparée on Södermalm takes 8 to 12 people, while a restaurant in Gamla stan has room for up to 60 guests in its own. One of the restaurants also has a special menu for parties alongside the à la carte.
Food to take away is offered by two of the restaurants, one in Vasastan and one on Södermalm. Both have a separate take-away page on their websites, which says what can be collected.
If you have a dog with you, there is an option on Södermalm: one of the restaurants welcomes dogs in the bar area, the same part where you can come without a booking.
