Restaurants in Karlstad: 12 places around Stora torget, in Inre hamn and by the Klarälven

Restaurants in Karlstad lie close to one another: this page gathers places north of Stora torget, on the way to the Central Station, in Inre hamn and along the river Klarälven. It helps you choose between lunch and an evening restaurant and between square, quay and river: the address and a description are in each card, and the map below the cards shows how far apart they are.

Cards checked on 7 October 2026. Editor: Alex. Found a mistake? Leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

Which part of town suits you

The page helps if you are looking for a weekday lunch in the centre, if you want dinner by the water in the harbour, or if you are going to the museum on Sandgrundsudden and want to eat in the same building.

Four locations: the square, the station, the harbour and the river

  • Stora torget: Kungsgatan runs along the north side, Tingvallagatan along the south side.
  • Västra Torggatan: from the station past the square to the museum on Sandgrundsudden.
  • Klarälven: Norra Strandgatan follows the river, and Sandgrundsudden is the point where it divides.

Everything here is within walking distance. From Stora torget it is about half a kilometre as the crow flies both north to the river and south to the harbour, measured on the map points of the cards. Västra Torggatan ties most of it together: the street starts down by the station, passes the square and ends at the museum, and four of the restaurants have their address there.

North of the square there are three kitchens within one block, two of them at the same address. In Inre hamn you sit by the water: the restaurant on Tullhusgatan itself describes its view over the harbour. By the river there are two locations: the museum on Sandgrundsudden and Norra Strandgatan.

The full range, also outside the centre, is in the directory category Restaurants. Facts about the city are on the Karlstad page, and food guides for other cities are under Restaurants and cafés.

Lunch, afternoon or evening: when the kitchens open

  • Weekday lunch: from 11.30 am in all four parts, from 10 am at the food bar on Norra Strandgatan.
  • From the afternoon: 3 pm on Matrosgränd, 4 pm on Västra Torggatan south of the square.
  • Evening only: 5 or 6 pm north of the square, on Tingvallagatan and in the warehouse on Tynäsgatan.
  • Sunday: five places give Sunday hours, none of them in the harbour.

Weekday lunch is served in all four parts (the restaurants' websites, October 2026). The Italian restaurant on Järnvägsgatan serves lunch from 11.30 am to 4 pm on weekdays, the restaurant on Kungsgatan opens at 11.30 am Tuesday to Friday, and in the harbour a lunch buffet is laid out from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm. On Sandgrundsudden lunch is served from 11.30 am to 2 pm on weekdays and until 3 pm at the weekend, and the food bar on Norra Strandgatan is open from 10 am to 5 pm.

Several kitchens open only later in the day. On Matrosgränd service starts at 3 pm Monday to Saturday, and on Västra Torggatan south of the square at 4 pm Monday to Thursday, 3 pm on Fridays and noon at the weekend. The Italian restaurant north of the square opens at 5 pm Tuesday to Friday and at 1 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Evening-only places are the restaurant with the French-inspired menu (from 6 pm Tuesday to Saturday), the tapas restaurant on Tingvallagatan (5 pm Tuesday to Thursday, 4 pm on Friday and Saturday) and the small restaurant in the warehouse (5 pm Wednesday to Saturday). The harbour restaurant on Tullhusgatan serves in the evening from Thursday to Saturday.

Monday is the thinnest day: north of the square none of the three kitchens gives any Monday hours, and the tapas restaurant is closed on both Sunday and Monday. Late evenings belong to Kungsgatan, open until 1 am Tuesday to Thursday and until 3 am on Friday and Saturday. The cards in the directory also show opening hours, but it is the restaurant's own website that counts.

Booking, parties and kitchens: what sets the places apart

  • Booking online: most have a booking button on their website.
  • Larger parties: e-mail on Järnvägsgatan, advance booking from ten guests in the museum, a separate page for parties on Kungsgatan.
  • Dogs: welcome in the warehouse on Tynäsgatan and at the food bar on Norra Strandgatan.

Tables are as a rule booked on the restaurant's website (October 2026). That is the case on Tingvallagatan, on Matrosgränd, at the harbour restaurant on Tullhusgatan and at the two restaurants at Västra Torggatan 19, where you can also phone. The Italian restaurant on Järnvägsgatan refers to a booking service and asks larger parties to e-mail. The food bar on Norra Strandgatan says nothing about table booking, and in the last half hour before closing only take away is sold there.

The restaurant in the museum on Sandgrundsudden is open to everyone: those who only want to eat do not need to pay admission. Parties of ten or more are asked to book in advance, and evenings are taken by booking. Salad, bread and coffee are included in the lunch.

The kitchens differ more than the locations. Two Italian restaurants have been around for a long time, the one north of the square since 1974 and the one on Järnvägsgatan since the mid-1980s, both with pizza, pasta and take away. The restaurant that shares an address with the former opened in 1979 and has a French-inspired menu, a wine cellar and separate rooms for parties. On Tingvallagatan tapas are served, made of Spanish produce in a Swedish interpretation, and at Västra Torggatan 8 traditional Swedish home cooking.

In the harbour the restaurant on Tullhusgatan cooks over fire and grill and bakes Neapolitan pizza in a wood-fired oven, with vegetarian and vegan options. The kitchen on Matrosgränd takes its flavours from the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Middle East and has a vegan menu. The small restaurant in the warehouse serves traditional dishes in new versions with drinks from microbreweries in Värmland, with a stage for gigs and quiz nights on some evenings. The hotel restaurant by the river has traditional dishes with influences from other parts of the world.

Questions and answers

Where can I have lunch in Karlstad on a weekday?

In all four parts of the centre: the kitchens on Kungsgatan, Järnvägsgatan, Tullhusgatan and Sandgrundsudden open at 11.30 am on weekdays, on Kungsgatan not on Mondays (October 2026), and the food bar on Norra Strandgatan as early as 10 am.

Which restaurants are open on Sundays?

Five of the restaurants give Sunday hours on their websites: the two Italian ones, the place with home cooking on Västra Torggatan, the restaurant in the museum and the food bar by the river. In Inre hamn none of the three gives any Sunday hours.

Do I need a museum ticket to eat on Sandgrundsudden?

Where is there vegetarian and vegan food?

At several places: the food bar on Norra Strandgatan builds its menu on plant-based food, the kitchen on Matrosgränd has a vegan menu of its own, and the harbour restaurant on Tullhusgatan states vegetarian and vegan options. The lunch in the museum has vegetarian dishes alongside fish and meat.

Do I have to book a table?

Booking is offered by almost all, on the restaurant's website or through a booking service. Parties of ten or more are asked to book in advance in the museum, and on Järnvägsgatan larger parties are received by e-mail.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, at two places according to their own websites: in the warehouse on Tynäsgatan, both indoors and outdoors, and at the food bar on Norra Strandgatan.
