Three areas: the restaurant street, the blocks to the west and the lake side
- Sandgärdsgatan: three of the restaurants lie within ten house numbers, from number 10 to 19.
- To the west: Västergatan, Storgatan and Bäckgatan, at most 200 metres from Sandgärdsgatan.
- The lake side: Vattentorget is just over 400 metres from Sandgärdsgatan, on the other side of the railway.
The centre is small enough to walk through in a few minutes. Between Sandgärdsgatan and Västergatan it is about 200 metres, and from Sandgärdsgatan down to Vattentorget by lake Växjösjön just over 400 metres as the crow flies, measured on the map points of the cards. The railway lies in between: the restaurants in the third group all have addresses south of the tracks.
Sandgärdsgatan is the street to start on for those who have not decided. Two of the restaurants there are neighbours, at numbers 10 and 12, and a third has its address at numbers 17 to 19. On Kungsgatan, just under 150 metres to the east, there is a Japanese place that moved there in May 2024.
To the west there are four kitchens on three streets: a hotel with several dining rooms and a restaurant with a bar on Västergatan, a grill restaurant on Storgatan and a pub with a kitchen on Bäckgatan. South of the railway the range is different: a restaurant with a view of the lake on Vattentorget, a lunch place on Södra Järnvägsgatan and a kitchen with bowls and salads on Kampastigen.
All the restaurants of the city, also those outside the centre, are in the category Restaurants in the directory. The Växjö page describes the city, and more food guides are in the section Restaurants and cafés.
The hours: weekday lunch, evening places and Sunday
- Lunch Monday to Friday: the Italian restaurant on Sandgärdsgatan and all three kitchens south of the railway.
- From Tuesday: the Japanese place on Kungsgatan serves lunch, and the restaurant with a concert stage opens at 11.30 am.
- Evening only: from 4 or 5 pm west of Sandgärdsgatan.
- Sunday: three kitchens give Sunday hours, two of them south of the railway.
Weekday lunch is unevenly spread over the week (the restaurants' websites, October 2026). The Italian restaurant on Sandgärdsgatan serves lunch from 11.30 am to 2 pm Monday to Friday and opens again at 5 pm. The Japanese place on Kungsgatan serves lunch from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm Tuesday to Friday and from noon to 3 pm on Saturdays, and the kitchen is closed between 3 and 4 pm. The restaurant with the concert stage opens at 11.30 am Tuesday to Saturday but only at 4 pm on Mondays.
South of the railway you can have lunch on every weekday. The restaurant on Vattentorget opens at 11.30 am Monday to Friday and has both lunch and à la carte, the lunch place on Södra Järnvägsgatan is open from 9 am to 4 pm with lunch in the middle of the day and closes over the weekend, and the kitchen on Kampastigen is open from 11 am to 7 pm.
West of Sandgärdsgatan it is the evening that counts. The pub on Bäckgatan opens at 5 pm on Mondays and at 4 pm Tuesday to Saturday, the grill restaurant on Storgatan at 5 pm Tuesday to Thursday and at 4 pm Friday to Sunday, and the restaurant with a bar at Västergatan 6 is open from 5 pm Wednesday to Saturday. The wine bistro on Sandgärdsgatan opens at 5 pm Tuesday to Thursday, at 4 pm on Fridays and at noon on Saturdays.
Sunday is the thinnest day: only the grill restaurant on Storgatan (4 to 10 pm), the restaurant by the lake (noon to 8 pm) and the kitchen on Kampastigen (11 am to 5 pm) give Sunday hours. On Mondays the grill restaurant and the wine bistro are closed. The hours in the directory cards may differ, so go by the restaurant's own website.
Format and booking: dining rooms, stages and the phone
- Several dining rooms at one address: at Västergatan 10 the dining room, the bistro and the bar are booked separately.
- Live music: Friday and Saturday from 9.30 pm to 1 am at the wine bistro, concerts by programme on the same street.
- A chain: the grill restaurant on Storgatan has sister restaurants in three other cities.
The largest address is the hotel at Västergatan 10, which has 74 rooms, its own bakery and three places to eat: a dining room, a bistro with an atrium and a bar that also serves brunch. The kitchen describes its style as modern Småland cooking, with forest, meadow and lake as the starting point. Each part has its own booking on the website, so look at which part you are booking.
On Sandgärdsgatan music is part of the evening. The wine bistro has a small stage where musicians play on Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30 pm to 1 am, and the restaurant at numbers 17 to 19 has concerts by programme and a nightclub with an age limit of 18 on Friday and Saturday, open until 3 am. The Italian neighbour has a wine bar of its own and takes cards only. The Japanese place on Kungsgatan is an izakaya, a Japanese pub where the small dishes are the main thing.
Tables are booked on the website at most of them: that is the case at the wine bistro, at the grill restaurant, at the pub on Bäckgatan, at Västergatan 6 and on Kungsgatan. The restaurant by the lake refers to the phone and has Greek-inspired food and grilled dishes.
The kitchen on Kampastigen has bowls, salads and sushi and delivers within the city for orders of at least 15 dishes. The lunch place on Södra Järnvägsgatan has outdoor seating when the weather allows. The grill restaurant on Storgatan cooks South American grill and barbecue.
