How to choose an area: the centre, Linnéstaden or outside the inner city

  • In the centre: Magasinsgatan and Vallgatan inside the moat, and Sankt Eriksgatan in Nordstaden.
  • In Linnéstaden: Linnégatan and Nordenskiöldsgatan.
  • Outside the inner city: Tunnbindaregatan and Norra Skeppspromenaden on Hisingen, and Hornsgatan in Gamlestaden.
  • This page is a selection: the catalogue holds more than two hundred Asian restaurants and sushi bars.

The groups are arranged by location, because people mostly eat sushi close to work, close to home or where they have an errand anyway. In the centre the places are on Magasinsgatan and Vallgatan inside the moat, Vallgraven, and on Sankt Eriksgatan in Nordstaden. They include a restaurant with an à la carte menu that is open until 22:00, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and a small family-run place that closes at 19:00 on weekdays and at 17:00 on Saturdays (the places' own websites, October 2026).

In Linnéstaden two of the places are on Linnégatan and one is on Nordenskiöldsgatan. There are sushi bars where you eat in or take the food with you, and a place for omakase: a Japanese way of dining in which the chef chooses the dishes for the guest according to the ingredients in season, as the catalogue card explains.

On Hisingen the places are on Tunnbindaregatan and Norra Skeppspromenaden, and in Gamlestaden on Hornsgatan. They close earlier than the restaurant in the centre: between 19:00 and 20:30 according to the cards. More places, including those not listed here, are in the catalogue category Asian Restaurants & Sushi Bars, and facts about the city are on the city page. Guides to other restaurants are gathered under Restaurants and cafés.

Before you order: menu, pieces and takeaway

  • Lunch: a separate menu on weekdays, at one restaurant in the centre between 11:00 and 15:00.
  • Menu: à la carte, lunch and takeaway can be three different menus.
  • Pieces: compare the contents, not just the number.
  • Take away: you collect the food yourself.
  • Payment: one of the places is cash-free and has self-service.

One restaurant can have several menus. One of the restaurants in the centre has separate menus for à la carte, lunch and takeaway, and lunch is served Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 15:00 (the restaurant's website, October 2026). What you have read in the à la carte menu therefore does not necessarily apply to lunch or to the food you take with you.

Sushi is mostly sold by the number of pieces. The menus we read in October 2026 had options with 10, 12, 15 and 30 pieces, and two options with the same number of pieces can hold different amounts of nigiri and maki. At one of the places the lunch price was lower than the regular price for the same dish.

Take away on a Swedish menu means collection: you order and pick up the food yourself. One of the places outside the inner city takes orders online, is cash-free and has self-service, and the food is eaten in or taken away. One of the places in the centre takes advance orders by phone. Whether the food can also be delivered is stated on the place's own ordering page.

Tables are booked directly with the restaurant. The restaurant with the à la carte menu in the centre has a booking link on its website and does not take bookings through its contact form.

Vegetarian, vegan and allergies: read the full contents

  • A roll with avocado can also contain shrimp.
  • Vegetarian is not always vegan: egg and mayonnaise occur.
  • Tofu in the name does not rule out egg in the dish.
  • Several places also serve poke bowls, Korean dishes or pho.

The name of a roll does not tell you everything about what is in it. The menus we read in October 2026 included a roll with avocado and tempura that also contained shrimp, and a vegetarian truffle roll with tamago, a Japanese omelette, and mayonnaise. The first is not vegetarian and the second is not vegan.

The same goes for hot dishes: an udon with tofu contained egg on one of the menus. Read the full description of the dish, with filling, sauce and topping, and mention any allergies when you order.

Several of the places serve more than sushi. The menus include poke bowls, Korean dishes such as bulgogi and bibimbap, and Vietnamese pho. That makes it easier to eat together when not everyone in the group wants raw fish.

Questions and answers

Where can I find sushi in central Gothenburg?

Inside the moat and in Nordstaden: the places in the first group are on Magasinsgatan, Vallgatan and Sankt Eriksgatan. The address is on every card.

What is omakase?

Omakase is a Japanese way of dining in which the chef chooses the dishes for the guest, often according to the ingredients in season. The selection includes one place for omakase, in Linnéstaden.

How late are the sushi places open in the evening?

It varies a lot. The places outside the inner city close between 19:00 and 20:30, while the restaurant with the à la carte menu in the centre is open until 22:00, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

When is lunch sushi served?

On weekdays around midday. At one of the restaurants in the centre the lunch menu applies Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 15:00, and after that the regular menu applies.

Can I pick up sushi instead of eating in?

Yes, several of the places sell food to take away, and some take orders online or by phone. Take away means that you collect the food yourself.

Is vegetarian sushi always vegan?

No. A vegetarian roll can contain egg and mayonnaise, and a roll with avocado can also contain shrimp. Read the full contents of the dish.

Can I pay in cash at sushi restaurants?

Not everywhere: one of the places in the selection is cash-free and has self-service. Expect to pay by card.
