How to choose: a new book, a profile of its own or an antiquarian shop
- Large bookstores: open 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, and on Sundays too.
- Bookshops with a profile of their own: a personal selection, children's books or one genre in depth.
- Antiquarian booksellers: second-hand and rare books, with shorter opening hours.
- This page is a selection: the catalogue has over eighty cards in the category.
The three large bookstores are within walking distance of each other: on Mäster Samuelsgatan and Kungsgatan in the centre and in the Sturegallerian arcade on Östermalm. All three are open 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, until 17:00 or 18:00 on Saturdays and for a few hours in the middle of the day on Sundays (the shops' own websites, read on 7 October 2026). One of them also sells toys, yarn and craft supplies, another has a children's corner and gift wrapping, and the third, founded in 1897, states over 60,000 titles and periodicals in the shop.
The bookshops with a profile of their own are in Gamla stan and on Södermalm. On Götgatan there is an independent bookshop that has existed since 1927 and has also published books since 2017, and on Stora Nygatan a bookshop with a personal selection, from classics to current bestsellers. On Västerlånggatan there is a specialist bookshop for science fiction, fantasy, manga, horror, comics, games and collectibles, and by Mariatorget a children's bookshop with a café.
The antiquarian booksellers are on Drottninggatan, Birger Jarlsgatan and Kommendörsgatan. The largest of them was founded in 1929 and states over 100,000 titles, another specialises in art, crafts, architecture and design, and the third has books in every conceivable subject.
All bookshops and antiquarian shops in the catalogue, including those not listed here, are in the category Bookstores. More about Stockholm is on the city page, and more guides to shops are gathered under Shopping.
Opening hours, ordering and price: how it works
- Open on Sundays: all the large bookstores and three of the bookshops with a profile of their own.
- Antiquarian shops: one is open every day, one only on weekdays from 13:00 to 18:00.
- The book is not in stock: the smaller bookshops take orders by email.
- Price: can differ between a chain's online store and its physical shop.
Sunday is not a closed day for anyone who wants a new book: the three large bookstores are open from 11:00 or 12:00 until 16:00 or 17:00, and the same goes for the specialist bookshop on Västerlånggatan, the bookshop on Götgatan and the children's bookshop by Mariatorget (the websites, 7 October 2026). The bookshop on Stora Nygatan gives opening hours for weekdays, 11:00 to 18:00.
The antiquarian shops keep other hours. The one on Drottninggatan is open every day of the week, the one on Birger Jarlsgatan on weekdays from 10:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays from 12:00 to 16:00, and the one on Kommendörsgatan from Monday to Friday, 13:00 to 18:00.
If the book is not on the shelf, it can often be ordered. Two of the bookshops with a profile of their own take orders by email, and the bookstore in Sturegallerian has a web shop with over 40,000 titles in eight languages. At one of the chains the price can differ between the online store and the physical shop, and the shop accepts returns.
Author evenings, children, accessibility and selling books
- Author talks: at six of the bookshops and antiquarian shops.
- Children: a children's corner in a large bookstore and a whole children's bookshop with a café.
- Wheelchair: the specialist bookshop in Gamla stan has one step and a ramp.
- Selling books: contact the antiquarian shop first.
Several of the bookshops are stages as well. Six of the shops arrange author talks, signings or readings, and the bookshop on Stora Nygatan has a stage of its own with authors and lecturers several times a week. The large antiquarian shop on Birger Jarlsgatan has readings, music and other cultural evenings on its programme (the websites, 7 October 2026).
With children there are two clear choices: the large bookstore on Mäster Samuelsgatan has a children's corner, and the children's bookshop by Mariatorget has a café and a calendar of its own.
The specialist bookshop on Västerlånggatan is in an older building with one step at street level. According to the shop website there is a ramp at the main entrance that the staff help with, and stairlifts that take wheelchairs up to 255 kilos in total but not powered wheelchairs. The nearest metro station is Gamla stan.
If you want to sell books, the antiquarian shops are the place to turn to, but do not arrive unannounced with your bags. One of them has a separate phone number for purchases, and another asks sellers to email a list or pictures first.
